When it comes to making sustainable choices, there's often a struggle between doing the right thing ethically versus the most convenient and cost-effective. Throw in the additional burden of the cost-of-living crisis, and you can see why sadly the planet is too often defeated. Whilst recently researching setting up an online sustainable clothing store (thank you for your support James Watson), I found some shocking statistics regarding the fashion industry and the devastating impact it's having on the planet. I think we all appreciate that the pollution from transport, manufacturing and fossil fuels are amongst the most damaging; you can sometimes see and smell the ugly fumes. But fashion? According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the sector is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined! With 60% of us wanting to shop more sustainably, we need to do much more to stop current habits and create and promote more environmentally friendly ones. The UN predicts that by 2050, more than two-thirds of us will live in cities, so it’s in our interest to make them as livable as possible. Reducing the number of cars on the road has immediate and long-lasting effects on air quality. But that’s not the only health benefit. As people look to other forms of sustainable transportation, active transport will rise, resulting in more cycling, walking, and running. This translates to a happier, healthier population. And did we mention the noise? According to the WHO, noise pollution is almost as bad as air pollution when it comes to our health.
