Inline versions have high accuracy. Insertion ultrasonic flowmeters offer lower cost than inline alternatives because they do not require the expense of a meter body, nor do they ordinarily require the replacement of any existing pipe length during installation. Clamp-on types offer lower cost also, can be used for large line sizes, offer some portable models, and can be used to check another meter or to locate flow problems. In addition to the traditional advantages, suppliers are significantly improving accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability. Energy, including energy conservation and other markets, have the potential to create even more demand, particularly as technology improves to enable new applications. There is also greater desire for non-contact flow measurement. Insertion ultrasonic flowmeters interfere only minimally – if at all – with the flowstream, and therefore have a negligible effect on process throughput. Clamp-on types are entirely non-intrusive. Inline ultrasonic flowmeters have a host of benefits that have made the technology a popular choice for a wide range of flow measurement applications in gas, liquid, and steam environments.
