On WW Day 🤔 in English 101. Though it is now more often used by landlubbers, chockablock has a nautical history. On board a sailing vessel, chock can refer to a wedge or block that is pressed up against an object to keep it from moving (on land, wheel chocks prevent vehicles from rolling), while a block and tackle system combines pulleys, often in cases called "blocks," and rope or cable to provide mechanical advantage for hoisting and hauling. Using a block and tackle to hoist a sail on a traditional sailing ship, there’s a point when the rope or cable is pulled as far as it will go—the blocks at that point are tight together and said to be "chockablock"; they can no longer move, as if they are being checked by a chock. When non-nautical types associated the chock of chockablock with chock-full, from the Middle English adjective chokkefull, meaning "full to the limit" (likely a figurative use of "full to choking"), they gave chockablock the additional meaning "filled up." Chockablock can also be an adverb meaning "as close or as completely as possible," as in "dorms full of students living chockablock" or the seemingly redundant "chockablock full."

“Expanding Language Options for Japan's Class 2 Driving License Exam🚗🌏📚✨” In an effort to address the shortage of taxi and bus drivers, Japan is introducing changes to the class 2 driver's license examination process. The country aims to make the test more accessible by providing the option to take it in one of 20 different languages. This initiative is intended to attract more foreign workers to these driving professions. As of early 2023, individuals born outside Japan held less than 1% of class 2 licenses. To broaden its appeal, the test will now include several Asian languages, such as Chinese and Korean, as well as Western languages like English and Portuguese. This language expansion aligns the class 2 license test with the class 1 license exam, which is for motorbikes and private cars and trucks. Both tests assess knowledge of traffic rules, but the class 2 exam also includes questions about safety measures, such as identifying brake problems and other potential vehicle issues. #japandrivertest #multilinguallicensing #class2licensejapan #foreignworkersinjapan #drivingexamlanguages
