“Energized about the Power of AI”, as I continue my series of GenAI related topics, this past weeks meetings had me deeply thinking about the next wave of SDLC. Not the traditional approach to SDLC where the industry is embedding GenAI into that entire process, it has me now discussing completely new models that are addressing the ADLC model or Agent Development Lifecycle.
I have posted in the past how I began my journey in IT from an applications development perspective which led to my founding my first business providing unique and proprietary application development services, I chose the name to incorporate as Syntax Systems in the mid-90’s which was acquired by International Computerware, Inc a few years later.
When I entered IT the SDLC processes were evolving and I needed to do my homework on history to understand this shift and to ensure that I kept my firm as a relevant player in this space. I learned the following:
1960s - Waterfall Model
1970s - Structured Programming and Design
1980s - Spiral Model and Prototyping: The Spiral model, developed by Barry Boehm in 1986
1990s - Incremental and Iterative Models: As technology advanced, so did SDLC approaches. Models like Rapid Application Development (RAD) and the Rational Unified Process (RUP) emphasized shorter, more iterative cycles with an emphasis on user feedback and flexibility.
2000s - Agile and DevOps
Since then, the SDLC has continued to evolve with methodologies such as Lean, Scrum, and Kanban, each contributing new practices that respond to changes in technology and business requirements.
I have been through 3 decades of SDLC variations and have been instrumental in helping both my own firm and others evolve. With that being said, we are now embarking on an entirely new process that is unlike SDLC, it is ADLC. AI agents break all the conventional rules we’ve come to expect from SDLC .
Traditional software is written in a programming language that is rule-based and deterministic, so the same input reliably produces the same output. Agents, in contrast, often include , and are goal-based and non-deterministic, producing dramatically different results, various understanding of prompts with different LLM’s
It’s time to now embrace the ADLC frameworks and the beauty of my 3 decades of SDLC is having the understanding of how to effect pragmatic and rapid change in this process.
