This milestone represents the culmination of years of challenges, frustrations, and determination within the clinical engineering community. For too long, well-meaning individuals and organizations around the world have attempted to address health disparities by donating technology they believed was needed, only to discover that these donations often fell short of their intended impact. The first edition of this book laid the groundwork for more effective and responsible medical technology donations. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and other recent emergencies have highlighted the need for even more stringent guidelines and provisions. I strongly urge potential donors to carefully review Annex 1: Criteria for Assessing the Acceptability of a Proposed Donation of a Medical Device. This section is crucial for understanding the essential factors that contribute to a successful and impactful donation.

Not exactly a professional achievement, but an achievement that is intimately linked to my professional path! Today I donated blood for the 24th time with AVIS - Associazione Volontari Italiani del Sangue, which wouldn't be a special number per se, but they make donors' IDs with 12 lines in them - in the picture, the back of the two donor ID cards I have owned so far, with the donation logs. Blood donation is one of the main reasons why I got involved in the field of engineering and management for health in the first place. It is a little weird to think that my very first donation was only a few days apart from the first midterm exam of my Bachelor's, that the end of the first card coincides with me defending my Master's thesis on the management of blood donation centers and that now I am working on a PhD dissertation on the topic of healthcare system optimization. A rather nice way of keeping track of time. PS: in summer, blood supplies tend to run dry. If you are healthy, weigh over 50 kilos and are under 60 years of age, consider becoming a donor.

As part of its first community service project for the year 2024/2025, the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City made a significant contribution to enhance healthcare services by donating a state-of-the-art medical machine to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. This advanced equipment, valued at Rs. 7,000,000, will be used for laser treatment to ablate varicose veins, providing critical care to patients in need. The decision to select Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for this donation was based on an evaluation of the pressing medical needs in the region. A growing number of patients have been on the waiting list for over eight months, seeking treatment for varicose veins, a condition that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. The donated machine, manufactured in Germany, uses cutting-edge laser technology, allowing for minimally invasive procedures that promote faster recovery times and improved patient outcomes. This timely donation from the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City is expected to significantly reduce the hospital’s treatment backlog and provide much-needed relief to patients. We believe in the power of collective efforts to create meaningful change, and we are proud supporters of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 in partnership with 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 (𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂), and the 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂). 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂 is a non-profit organization led by entrepreneur brothers Carl-Johan and Christian Brandt, who are photographers, models, and doctors. With 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂, they find sponsors to support charity missions in specific areas of need across the globe. Last year, one of their big projects was to help the organization 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂, which educates and trains African doctors on new techniques, collecting equipment, and making extended documentation to help 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂's future missions. Last June, it was 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂's 5th mission and by far the largest, with results exceeding all expectations. During the 2-week visit, they were able to: 👉Communicate and demonstrate micro neurosurgery principles in general and specific intra-operative techniques. 👉Train OR staff in micro neurosurgical instrumentation and specific micro neurosurgical equipment handling. 👉Operate 22 cases and assess 123 patients in an outpatient clinic. 👉Teach a comprehensive course on pre-, peri-, and post-operative dedicated neurosurgical care, including hands-on training in a neuro-intermediate care ward developed during the mission (!).  👉Provide special training for spinal cord injury patients by an occupational therapist. 👉Assess existing equipment and several pieces of vital importance received maintenance and repair by a biomedical engineer. 👉Host a symposium on the topics of epilepsy and global neurosurgery on June 13 with lecturers from the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) and the SANC team. Since then, 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂 has had monthly follow-up meetings on the patient's status. The ground foundation of 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂 is to show the world that 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. No contributions are too small or too big as long as you do SOMETHING. The board of directors of the OPTN established the Expeditious Task Force in September 2023 to study and make recommendations on ways to increase the number of donated organs used for transplant and to increase the efficiency of the organ placement process.
