Hey fellow 'people of architecture', we are conducting India’s largest survey on the state of architectural practice in India. Imagine embarking on a new journey to a beautiful place and people come together in a nice small bus. Everyone takes the available window-seats. As time goes on, everyone inside gets so busy enjoying the view outside that they ignore everything inside. As time goes on, more and more people get in. The bus conductor (the COA) doesn’t care about how many can fit in and how many more are coming in daily. Worse: you don't even need a ticket to get in anymore! Eventually there is no more space inside and newbies have to crawl on the dirty floor, while the ones near the window seats despite being uncomfortable don’t care because they have to get down soon. I could continue with this analogy but to summarise, this in my opinion is the current state of architecture practice in India. Those who are in a position to make meaningful change ignore that something is still fundamentally wrong. While those who need this desperately are dealing with it silently accepting this as their fate that it is never going to change. With this survey, we want to voice both these opinions so that the issue can’t be swept under the carpet anymore. We hope to instil hope that there is someone somewhere who believes this can change. If we are honest and smart in our approach we have a shot at pulling this off. People can ignore opinions but not facts. We are pursuing this truth.
