This is top of mind since my wife and I are at The Historic Cavalier Hotel & Beach Club for a few days. I worked in luxury hotels for 12 years. It was HARD work. When expectations are incredibly high, it can lead to guests who sometimes act…out of character…to put it nicely. Here are a few things you can do to make the staff’s life easier or make someone’s day: - Arriving early? Call ahead and let the front desk know. - Want a late check out? Ask at check in. - TIP. And tip well. I’m not going to say what most hotel employees make hourly, but it’s not enough to survive on by itself. 20% minimum for food service. $20/day for housekeeping (can be a range here depending on the type of hotel). $5/bag for bellmen. Tipping for front desk, concierge, beach staff, etc has a wider range, but most of these employees are usually hourly as well. - Have a good experience? Leave a review online! Have a bad experience? Speak with someone face to face during the stay. Nobody can fix your issue if you wait to vent until after you leave. Hotels will bend over backwards to do a “service recovery” if you give them the opportunity. - Help your housekeeper along the way and at checkout. I strip the bed at check out and organize all of the dirty towels in one place. I know this is excessive for most, but if you’ve ever worked a full shift helping strip beds and flip rooms, you know how much this helps. If you don’t want to do this, make sure you tip accordingly!

Results-Oriented General Manager | Expertise in Team Leadership & Revenue Management | Hospitality Innovator
Boutique Hotel Life So as a GM of a Small luxury hotel in the Caribbean people turn around to me and say "you have a easy life", "so much time off", "wish I had your job"! Well under my breathe I have to laugh! Being a GM of a Boutique hotel on a small island is far from "easy" and not one for those who think they will holiday. For instance my average day is 14 Hours starts at 6am ends at 10pm but I sometimes get a rest midday. We don't have the luxury of having a receptionist, assistant managers, front office managers, Head house keepers, Security managers, restaurant managers, food and beverage managers, store keepers etc. So the onus is on you as the GM to take on all of these roles, manage them, i have a leader in the Kitchen, Maintanence (but still you oversee this) Accounts and Sales are based in a central office as we are part of a small group (But you still have a role to play there too) Your day is made up of getting the facilities ready, following up morning emails, putting in purchase orders (being on a small island timing is crucial to make sure delivery is timed), giving the staff the daily duties and roles, then following up on the work. As much as you have good hearted team members and dedicated, you still have to take people by the hand and guide them. Tourism has not boomed in St Vincent so the core mentality is Fishing and Farming. Education is key so without a HR team this falls on you to be the "father & mother" of the operation. Landscaping this is part of your role too. Dining service is lead by you, Stock and storekeeping is led by you amongst many things. You have to be forever vigilant on the store and usage. Arrivals and departures this is your baby too, so no matter the pressure you face you have to be compared and smile. Housekeeping has standards to and this is your role to make sure the areas are maintained and prepared to the highest standards. So instead of having those people who are hired to manage the areas it all falls under the GM of this property to be forever vigilant, disciplined, fair, dedicated and inspirational to keep it all together, you cannot point fingers at others you have to look at the "man In the mirror" and say "you can do better, don't stop, keep it going, good job". Decisions and consequences are yours alone! It's a great challenge and fun because everyday is completely different even though similar in some ways. Being a GM in a SLH is by no means a holiday or simplistic! You have to be ready to keep going and going, then manage your life so you get the breaks as you can while driving the property to success. Come be a GM of a boutique hotel and then tell me after 3 months if you are happy with where you are. I love the challenge and being able to be creative keeping myself focused and busy. #boutiquehotels #hotelmanagement #generalmanager #hardworkpaysoff #dedicate #responsible #management #hospitality
