What I have learned about brownies. By now it was February 2023 (hang in there - we're getting closer!) and I'd emerged from another loop-the-loop. This loop reaffirmed that I was on the right track with my theory. My youngest child, Nathan, decided he wanted to expand his baking business and start selling at Berkhamsted Market. He'd started to sell his bakes during Covid to his neighbours who kept coming back for more. The thing you need to know about Nathan is he is relentless. Once he gets an idea in his head there is no stopping him and he would not let this idea drop until I had tracked down Mike who ran the market stalls. I couldn't find Mike. I went to LinkedIn which Simon thought was a complete waste of time. It has been one of my most viral posts to date. We found Mike! Finally, my LinkedIn posting was delivering tangible results. What I have learnt about this experience: 1. It's easier to sell brownies than services which take a business to a better place (something about short-term pleasure here I think). 2. Getting teenagers away from their phones and talking to people is one of the best things for them and the community (the community love him). 3. It would be mathematically very hard to produce and sell quality brownies at enough volume to sustain a family (more than 6,000 hospitality venues closed in 2023, new openings in the sector have reduced for the third year in a row.). I have an important question for today, what is your favourite bake? #femalefoundersrise #business #sustainability Ps this post is part of a series of posts which help you better understand me and why I believe businesses can use money to take us all to a better place. This picture is Nathan, known locally as Mr Nate, on his first day at the market. Since that day he's sold 945 bakes, won two awards, bought his own baking kit and gazebo and received countless messages from people saying they loved his bakes and having a chat with him. Being a person who cannot be trusted near a balloon whisk I asked "Nathan why is it you love baking so much?" "Mum, I love baking because it makes people smile" His strapline is #bakestomakeyousmile Often in business, we over-complicate things. Perhaps I should create a new hashtag #profitstomakeyousmile

Two questions I get asked the most by my founder friends and clients is: 1. How do you hire such amazing talent? 2. How do you retain them for years? Answer is simple. 1. Hook & Reel them with a story. 2. Convert them with an offer too good to say no to. 3. Retain them by providing so much professional value and self fulfilment that they would feel stupid to leave. (the formula is the same as growing and retaining users for any consumer centric business tbh) This is a shoutout to Akshat Narula for being the first superhero we discovered and UNLEASHED onto the D2C space. He was the first hire we made 2.5 years ago and the reason brilliant young upstarts like Sakshi Sainik, Ashwin Gogawale, Shubham Garg and Omkar Sangle decided to join our team. He is the reason why clients such as The Cinnamon Kitchen and a dozen others grew and scaled the way they did. He is the reason why Porcellia (Funnelity) has not lost a single client in the past 2+ years. And now, we're in a very interesting phase of our growth, where all the OG team members are growing into senior roles and have multiple people reporting to them. Their transitions from hard-core operators to managers is such a fun process to watch unfold. If you're someone looking for a breakout role in performance and growth and are excited at the prospect of helping small business owners 10x their D2C brands, then you should definitely speak to Akshat. We're actively hiring for almost all imaginable roles in marketing, design, video & content.
I've been working on The Cinnamon Kitchen for the past 546 days of my life. In radio silence. Day in and day out. I've seen a lot of sleepless nights, burnouts, and weary days. And I don't regret it at all. (neither do I endorse it) Is it worth it? Hell yeah. Growing a business from scratch is like a drug. You open your laptop every morning and there are 1000 fires to extinguish. Some fires die. Some kill you. You keep running. Day in and day out. Until your brain is sore. And you still choose to wake up and fight the next day. You hate it. But you love it. You ask yourself why am I doing all this? And then you answer it yourself. The truth is you're a sucker for fulfillment. You know your time is limited on earth. And there's nothing out there that can truly fulfill you, except this. You know for every extra hour you put in. ↳ People would discover healthy, yet tasty snacks. You know for every extra mile you walk. ↳ People will get more jobs. You know for every strategy you implement. ↳ A homemaker or a budding chef will be able to easily start their bakery business. The lives you impact are infinite. The families you touch are countless. And so you keep going. Day in and day out. For a greater vision. If you resonate with this until now, you know truly who I am. And you also know who we truly are at Porcellia. This is the culture we've built over the last 2 years. As we know, most marketing partners in the industry: 1. Either lack the skill to help D2C businesses 2. Or are only in it to make money for themselves & do not care for their clients. But when skills and empathy come together. That is when the real magic happens. Shout out to the OG Porcellia team for making this happen. We should definitely market ourseleves more :) Ritesh D. Ritelin, Sakshi Sainik, Ashwin Gogawale, Omkar Sangle, Shubham Garg And shout out to Priyasha Saluja for truly understanding her customers inside out and taking a bet on The Cinnamon Kitchen and on us.

Yet as I sit here eating this delicious Mediterranean Chicken Salad at Mazaa Kabob House in Tracy, I realize that I didn't bring a toothbrush.
