Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and a Call for Progress As we celebrate the delayed emancipation of enslaved people in Texas this Juneteenth, it's crucial to remember the historical context. The fact that Black Texans weren't informed of their freedom for months after the Emancipation Proclamation highlights the systemic barriers Black people have always faced in America. I didn't learn about Juneteenth in school when I was growing up. It was later on in college that I fully understood the history and what it meant. As a Black man in tech, Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of resilience and the fight for equality. It motivates me to push for a more inclusive tech industry where Black talent is not only valued but actively fostered. The tech industry thrives on innovation. To truly move forward, we need diverse perspectives and experiences at the table. Juneteenth serves as a call to action for the entire industry to dismantle barriers and invest in creating a more equitable space for Black professionals and professionals of color. It involves critical analysis, often from an interdisciplinary perspective, to understand the complexities of race, power structures, and social dynamics that impact Black individuals and communities. Critical Blackness engages with issues such as systemic racism, colonialism, social justice, and cultural identity. It aims to deconstruct and critique how Blackness is perceived, represented, and treated within various spheres, including academia, media, politics, and everyday life. Scholars, activists, and thinkers contribute to Critical Blackness by exploring historical narratives, power dynamics, and the intersections between race, class, gender, and other identities. The goal is not only to understand the challenges faced by Black communities but also to advocate for change, equality, and empowerment. This course is an interdisciplinary workshop series that examines the intellectual traditions of, and cultural contributions made by people of African descent throughout the world. Critical Blackness offers a unique opportunity to study the social, economic, educational, and political forces that have shaped the historic experience of colonial Africa, and that continue to determine our future. At The Folke Institute, we are driven by the power of inspiration and resilience. The words of Maya Angelou serve as a beacon of hope, teaching us that setbacks are not the end but are, in fact, pivotal moments that shape our identity, strength, and ability to rise above adversity. "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." These profound words move us to view our challenges as opportunities for growth, resonating deeply with the spirit of Black History Month. This time allows us to honor the journey, achievements, and resilience of the Black community, reflecting on the trials and triumphs that have led to meaningful change. The journey toward equity is filled with obstacles, but it remains an essential path to tread. By confronting and understanding our defeats, we unlock insights into our own potential and pave the way for a more inclusive world. As we celebrate diversity and learn from adversity, let's commit to continuing this important work beyond February. Together, we can advance our journey towards a more equitable future, inspired by the lessons of the past and the promise of what we can achieve through unity and perseverance. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 In our(Blackness) quest for success and validation, it is essential that we reconsider the narratives we’ve accepted about excellence. Historically, proximity to whiteness has been misconstrued as the benchmark of success—whether it’s choosing predominantly white institutions (PWIs) over historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), enrolling our children in private schools where they may face racism, bias, and discrimination, or serving in foundationally racist organizations instead of those committed to social justice and anti-racism - all for a perceived elevated social or socioeconomic status. Black heritage is rich with pioneers, intellectuals, and leaders who thrived because they leaned into their racial identity, not in spite of it. 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 - It’s carved from the resilience and ingenuity of our ancestors and should be the only standard to which we hold ourselves and our communities. • Let's redirect our support towards institutions that celebrate and cultivate our unique cultural identity. • Let's stop staying in spaces where cultivating community requires us to create sub-spaces or segments. • Let’s prioritize environments that nurture rather than negate our racial greatness. This shift is not just about choosing Black; it’s about choosing a path that honors our past and empowers our future. Invest in our own communities, support our HBCUs, choose educational environments that affirm our identity, and engage with organizations genuinely committed to racial justice. Redefine excellence on our terms. Black is not just beautiful—it is innovative, it is leadership, it is excellence in its purest form.
