Fear and Greed: The Twin Demons of Hospitality
"The eye of the greedy is like a god, always wanting more." - Yoruba Proverb
Fear and greed, twin demons that stalk the corridors of business,
Are particularly insidious in the hospitality industry.
Like twin vipers, they coil around the heart of a business,
Constricting its lifeblood.
A luxury hotel, a palace of comfort and indulgence,
Can be swiftly transformed into a haunted house
By these malevolent spirits.
Fear, a timid shadow, whispers doubts into the ears of management.
"What if we lower prices?" it hisses,
"What if guests complain?
What if we lose profits?"
This fear of losing market share can paralyze decision-making,
Preventing hotels from offering competitive rates.
Greed, on the other hand, is a ravenous beast,
Always demanding more.
It tempts hotels to inflate prices,
To cut corners on service,
To prioritize short-term gains over long-term reputation.
A hotel consumed by greed becomes a gilded cage,
Trapping guests in a gilded prison of dissatisfaction.
The antidote to these poisons lies in balance and wisdom.
A hotel that offers luxury without greed and operates with confidence, not fear,
Is a beacon in the hospitality industry.
It is a place where guests feel valued, not exploited.
Let us banish these twin demons from our hotels
And replace them with the spirits of hospitality and integrity.

I found this article by Mark Ellwood illuminating several critical issues in luxury hospitality management.
1. "Experience is not expertise."
In my years in operations, I've seen guests who assume they know everything about running a hotel just because they've stayed in many. But there's so much that goes on behind the scenes that guests never see. It takes years of hands-on experience to truly understand the intricacies of hotel management.
2. "There's a veritable chasm between being rich enough to buy a hotel and being savvy enough to run one."
How true this is! I've witnessed firsthand the challenges that arise when owners without hospitality experience try to micromanage operations. It often leads to frustrated staff and dissatisfied guests. Running a hotel requires a delicate balance of business acumen and genuine hospitality skills.
3. "Staff members vibrating with anxiety, precluding them from focusing fully on the guests."
When staff are constantly on edge due to overbearing ownership, it inevitably impacts the guest experience. I've learned how important it is to have a calm, confident team to create the right atmosphere for our guests.
As someone relatively new to the sales side of hospitality, I'm curious: How do you think we in sales can better communicate the complexity of hotel operations to potential investors who may lack industry experience?
