Hurricane Beryl's impact on Texas highlighted the critical importance of preparedness and collaboration among energy providers. At the recent PUC open meeting, several key updates were shared on the restoration efforts by AEP Texas, TNMP, Entergy, and CenterPoint. AEP Texas initiated its Level One Incident Command System ahead of Beryl's landfall, securing 4,500 resources and 1,200 crews. Despite 35,000 power outages primarily in Bay City, Palacios, and El Campo, AEP promptly restored power to 94% of customers. The resilience of modern infrastructure and the community's support for line workers were paramount to these efforts. TNMP demonstrated exceptional preparedness, leveraging advanced weather analytics and extensive mobilization of resources. Peak outages affected 116,000 customers, with most power restored within days. TNMP's use of drones for damage surveys and ongoing 24/7 efforts underscore their commitment to resilience and innovation in storm recovery. Entergy reduced customer outages from 252,000 to 105,000 in three days without any injuries, emphasizing safety and the importance of hardening the grid. Their manual balancing to avoid load shed and continuous customer communication were key to their success. Entergy's experience highlights the critical role of local generation and infrastructure hardening in maintaining system reliability. CenterPoint Energy tackled extensive damage, serving almost 3 million homes and businesses in Houston. With a workforce of about 12,000, they restored over 50% of outages within two days, aiming for 80% by the weekend. Effective communication and customer engagement were crucial in rebuilding trust post-storm. These updates reflect the dedication and collaborative spirit of Texas energy providers in the face of extreme weather. As we continue to navigate the challenges posed by such events, the importance of robust infrastructure, advanced preparation, and clear communication cannot be overstated.
