Inspired by Marc Randolph, this post is to emphasize what matters most. My son is joining the army in a week. I took 3 days leave from work to have the last pep talks. And basically just hang out. My key advice to him; 1) choose what kind of leader you want to be. 2) if opportunities come your way; trust your gut feeling and decide if it feels right (or not) 3) stand out in the crowd; don’t loose yourself 4) be patient, even though it is hard 5) you are very priveliged; Mom and Dad will be here for you if you need us; have the ultimate respect for those who does not have the same supporting Framework; they will be working twice as hard to maintain life. Now; it is time to plan my return to work; getting airborn tomorrow back to Norway. The achievements which matters the most will never be paid in regular salary. However, it makes you perform even better when back in office. Trust me. #businessathletes #familymatters

On Amelia Earhart Day, we reflect on the profound impact one individual can have on an entire industry and society at large. Amelia Earhart's achievements in aviation were groundbreaking: -First woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean (1932) -First person to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland (1935) -Set numerous speed and altitude records But her influence extends far beyond her flying career. Earhart was a vocal advocate for women's rights and worked tirelessly to promote opportunities for women in aviation and other male-dominated fields. As we honor her legacy, let's consider: -How can we continue to break barriers in our own industries? -What steps can we take to promote diversity and inclusion in leadership roles? -How can we inspire the next generation to pursue their passions, regardless of societal expectations? Amelia Earhart's life teaches us that with courage, perseverance, and a willingness to challenge the status quo, we can soar to new heights—both personally and professionally. What's your "Earhart moment"—a time when you defied expectations and charted your own course? #AmeliaEarhartDay #Leadership #Innovation #BreakingBarriers #WomenInSTEM #FlyHigh #WomenInAviation #DreamBig #HistoryMaker #DareMightyThings #KentStateCAE #CollegeOfAeronauticsAndEngineering -------------------- Courage “Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release From little things; Knows not the livid loneliness of fear, Nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear The sound of wings. How can Life grant us boon of living, compensate For dull grey ugliness and pregnant hate Unless we dare The soul’s dominion? Each time we make a choice, we pay With courage to behold the restless day, And count it fair.” —Amelia Earhart, c. 1928, as quoted in Amelia: My Courageous Sister, p. 74

Creating strategic thinkers in organisations | Leadership development | Coach | Business psychologist
This guy this morning… mocking me when I said I'd enquired about a 'call for noms' (Navy speak for an invitation to nominate yourself for a role) in Antarctica… The only roles were Class 5 licence drivers and ship unloaders doing 12 hour shifts of heavy lifting (which will never be an option for my poor old mum bod). He gave me this look. Then proceeded to gleefully mock me for his version of my imagined ideal role. "You know they don't need Psychologists down there?" "There's not a strategy office down there." It got worse. With a MOCK VOICE… yes people, he actually did this, "Now, let's just stop and think about what we're all doing here. Are we really unloading? Is it a ship we're unloading? Why should we unload this ship? And who are our customers??" 🤨 None of this has the same potency without the facials and the VOICE of course. I tell you, the ENJOYMENT he got out of this! Ok, I'll admit this is funny because there's a grain of truth in it. It reminded me of a comment made by a GM on my course once. This GM had said "this programme has really honed for me the importance of making time for strategic thinking but I've really struggled with the idea of becoming a chin-stroking executive who sits around 'thinking' for hours but not getting anything done." 🤔 It drew a smile from all of us at the time. And of course, this was the exact picture my husband was creating to brighten up our morning drudgery. But in my defence, the next thing she said was this - "But this strategic thinking process we've learnt helps me frame how I can use that time best, and feel productive." I'll concede that even very productive chin-stroking executives might not be a critical deployable NZDF post in Antarctica, and that there is a slim chance I may have to fork out for a fancy tour in order to tick this one off my bucket list, but I maintain that chin-stroking of the sort that sparks strategic insights in senior leaders who need to solve complex business problems is critical. Speaking of which, if very productive, strategic insight-sparking chin-stroking sounds like something you want to do more of, do I have something for you! There is ONE intake left for 2024 of the Strategic Thinker Development Programme. It's a public intake, so I can take individuals. I only run these once or twice a year. Get in touch to discuss if this is the right programme for you or your people.

The winds of change are blowing in the world of Teamster carhaulers, where recent victories have brought about a wave of inspiration and hope for a brighter future. As we reflect on the transformative power of unity and determination portrayed in the latest developments, it's clear that there is much to ponder and discuss. Here are some points to consider: - The story of Teamster carhaulers reclaiming strength and unity through the NMATA changes serves as a beacon of resilience and progress, urging us to strive for positive change in our own endeavors. - The collective efforts of the negotiating team led by Avral Thompson exemplify the impact of strategic vision and unwavering dedication in achieving shared goals and advancing as a community. - The victories in Buffalo, Lordstown, and Kansas City underscore the significance of solidarity and collaboration in overcoming challenges and securing a better future for all stakeholders involved. Reading about these triumphs not only sheds light on the positive developments in the carhaul industry but also sparks introspection on the power of unity and collective action in shaping our world. I'd love to hear your thoughts and feelings on this inspiring journey of transformation and progress. https://lnkd.in/efDcM7G7

Long hours, rough seas, and endless days – that's life in the merchant navy. 🌊⚓ After a week of intense work, here’s why chilling with colleagues is so important: Recharging Together: Those moments of relaxation are priceless after days of hard work. Unspoken Understanding: Even though we may not talk every day, six months together builds a deep, mutual understanding. Support System: We become each other’s support, always ready to lift one another up when needed. From Crew to Family: It’s these connections that remind me we’re not just a crew; we’re family. Work hard, relax harder. 💪👥 #MerchantNavyLife #Teamwork #SupportSystem #LifeAtSea

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 - 𝟑𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨 - Part 2 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 In retrospect… Life lessons have been delivered “free of charge” like, there is no #leadership without #followership. True on nation level and organizations or teams alike. 🍀 Immunity to act to given clues may lead to immunity to change or the need to adapt faster to the given situation. 🍀 It takes trust shared upfront, in order to „grow together” as a country, a team … 🍀 Courage is needed to lean into something new, to overcome doubts - indeed fear and to handle situations being outside the personal comfort zone. 🍀 In chaos it shows how leadership, cooperation, co-creation, professionalism, a strong “corporate identity” and team spirit (read comradeship) can make a positive difference! 𝑨 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 - 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 Nov 9 in ‘89 inspired me to better myself, not to stand still … a life with a purpose for a guy not having a High School degree! Also here, the rest is story telling 😊 I strongly felt, if others had their life turned “upside down”, my life and others could as well change, it was the urge to do something meaningful, thinking big or crazy – reaching for the stars … ⭐ 🚀 The leadership principles, change readiness and resilience combined with the Nov 9th experiences, and learnings, I found later confirmed in various leadership trainings in my civilian work life. Most importantly: Expect the un-expected! 𝑰𝒏 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 There is more work to do (#zeitenwende), today, tomorrow and mountains to climb … to me, it starts with a step forward. I am convinced, the major pieces in life, we achieve together with others. United we reach new horizons by communicating a shared vision, gather to innovate, work together and learn… continuously improving and being on the move. Göttingen, is the place I remember on November 9th but especially on German Unity Day ❤️🙏 May others experience, what it means to be reunited and to explore walking new paths together. Clear Insight to the Problem and Understanding it is so Critical to Success.
During WWII, the Allies were looking for ways to reduce the number of airplanes being shot down. The engineers' first reaction was to reinforce the areas on returning planes that had the most bullet holes. However, a mathematician named Abraham Wald pointed out that they should actually reinforce the areas with the fewest bullet holes. In short, these were the most critical parts of the plane, and the planes were returning because they hadn’t been hit in those areas yet. I often remember this analogy when looking at People programs within companies. I notice a tendency among People teams to want to “patch” all the holes in an organization by adding new programs. And it makes total sense—you hear about a problem in an engagement survey, and your natural reaction is to fix it with new solutions. Then voilà—you expect better engagement scores! In my experience, I’ve seen that companies that double down on what’s already working well is actually a more effective solution. The reason is that what’s working well is what makes you unique as an organization. It’s what employees find at your company that they don’t find anywhere else. This uniqueness is a major reason employees stay and find fulfillment. In short, think about adding armor to your core cultural strengths. Sometimes, these strengths aren’t even obvious to us because we take them for granted. Reinforce those areas, amplify them even more, and you'll see even better results!
