PFAS has dominated the technical sessions at some of the recent conferences I’ve attended. There was some great PFAS content at both the International Water Conference in San Antonio and the fall conference of the American Water Works Association’s Florida Section, both of which took place toward the end of 2023. One point that was made clear at both conferences is the need for flexibility and redundancy in order to adapt to changes in water treatment needs and regulatory drivers. Take the treatment methods for separation versus destruction. The separation methods such as activated carbon and ion exchange, are standard treatment practices while destruction methods are under development with limited operating experience. Any treatment system deserves some level of site specific bench, or pilot scale testing however, the destruction methods may have proprietary features that require the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) engagement. An emerging separation method, foam fractionation, is being tested at several facilities and could offer a targeted solution for removing PFAS without a media that is subject to breakthrough and replacement. For media-based separation, such as activated carbon or ion exchange, the media has limited capacity to capture PFAS, which will result in a breakthrough and require replacement. To manage the risk of breakthrough, the best approach is providing redundant capacity such as lead/lag pressure vessels or media bed sampling for measuring bed capacity. Another option is to lead with activated carbon treatment and follow with ion exchange treatment, that not only provides redundancy from an operation standpoint, but also the ability to target both long-chain and short-chain PFAS through a sequential treatment scheme. So, again, lessons learned dictate the importance of providing flexibility and redundancy — especially at the rate that our understanding of PFAS continues to expand.

Areas such as medical facilities, laboratories, industrial plants, food processing facilities require regular decontamination to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens and hazardous substances. Decontamination methods should be effective but safe for those using the space. The Halton Vita VDU-750 provides ensured bio decontamination thanks to efficient H2O2 vapour production and its complete distribution throughout the space up to 750 m3. The unit is capable of destroying even the most resistant microorganisms, such as bacterial spores. Its automated operation eliminates the risk of human error, providing consistent and reliable results. Additionally, the system is safe for even the most sensitive materials, including electronics. The process is carefully monitored and verified with integrated H2O2 sensor technology. Aeration process with integrated catalyser removes residual hydrogen peroxide leaving the space not only clean and safe but also ready for immediate use. The Halton Vita VDU-750 is the result of a collaboration between Halton and Cleamix Oy, the leader in the decontamination process.
