Creative Energy is developing a sewer heat recovery district energy system that can capture excess thermal energy from Metro Vancouver's nearby sewer main to provide virtually emissionless heating, eliminating the use of natural gas on-site and helping the development achieve net-zero carbon operations. This is achieved using centralized high-efficiency heat pumps, that can move heat from the sewer system and into the district energy system using only clean electricity from the B.C. grid. For peaking purposes, electric boilers will also be installed to complement the sewer heat recovery, while natural gas boilers are reserved for back up purposes only, ensuring the system has excellent resiliency through the use of multiple fuel sources and redundant capacity. Overall, Creative Energy's strategy will result in an annual emissions reduction of over 4,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases."

When you find a solution that helps knock down biosolids disposal costs by over two-thirds, it’s worth repeating. That’s what a decade of data show for a U.S. project I worked on years ago that relied on thermal hydrolysis processes (THP) to dramatically reduce the amount and cost of biosolids disposal and reuse. It’s a project I developed while working with global thermal hydrolysis provider Cambi, and the project became Cambi’s first and largest thermal hydrolysis project in the U.S. Before the thermal hydrolysis-driven plant came online in 2014, the water and sewer utility was spending up to $1.8 million a month on biosolids disposal, and they were hauling out over 1,200 tons of biosolids per day for disposal. Within four months of the facility coming online, disposal costs dropped down to $500,000 per month, with just under 400 tons to haul out each day. Having worked on other thermal hydrolysis projects, including one in Dublin that was the world’s largest THP installation at the time, these outcomes don’t come as a surprise to me. And now here at Kiewit, we’ve been looking to THP as an effective solution to implement for utilities that are exploring ways to reduce their biosolids costs and volumes.
