The friability test ensures that uncoated tablets have sufficient mechanical resistance to prevent surface damage or signs of abrasion or breakage during handling (mechanical shocks, friction, attrition) until their use. 🎯🎯Applied to a specific number of uncoated tablets, the friability test involves assessing the mass loss of these tablets due to friction and falls under certain conditions. 🎯🎯Equipment The apparatus used for the friability test of uncoated tablets is described in the European Pharmacopoeia 2004. It is a rotating drum with an inner diameter of 283 mm to 291 mm and a height of 36 mm to 40 mm, made of a transparent synthetic polymer with polished interior surfaces that do not generate static electricity. One side of the drum is removable. With each rotation, the tablets are projected from the center of the drum towards the outer wall in a curvilinear trajectory with an inner radius between 75.5 mm and 85.5 mm. Additionally, with each rotation, the tablets roll, slide, and fall onto the wall or on each other. 🎯🎯Evaluation Criteria Friability is expressed in terms of mass loss, calculated as a percentage of the initial mass of the uncoated tablets tested. The maximum acceptable mass loss, for most products, is 1 percent of the mass of the tablets subjected to the test.
