The #wednesdaymailbag is here. This week, Barry, from Brighton, wants to know my thoughts on Ford Field, and the potential economic impact of the Detroit Lions Playoff Run. The short answer... Go Lions! To level set a few things, we'll avoid questions about public financing of Stadiums for now... we'll save that fun conversation for another day. Now let's talk about Ford Field... It doesn't have the reputation of Arrowhead or Lambeau, but it is one of the National Football League (NFL)'s most unique venues. It's a domed stadium that fits in well with the overall fabric of Downtown Detroit, and there is a historic adaptive re-use component to the stadium as well. The stadium was able to re-use a former Hudson's department store warehouse which provides an interesting sense of history for what is still a relatively young venue, and helps the stadium feel like part of the neighborhood whether it's game day or not. As far as the atmosphere goes... all it took was a some good football to get us Detroit Lions fans out of our shell. The atmosphere this year and especially in the playoffs has been fantastic, and I expect that to continue. Finally, I would say the overall economic impact came at a perfect time. While Detroit has is unique in that all four professional sports teams play Downtown, our teams have had a tough go since 2014 or so, and I don't think the pandemic did Downtown Detroit any favors. With the #NFL playoffs in full swing, it just seemed appropriate to share this article about the changing of the guard amongst NFL Head Coaches. What's particularly interesting is the clear reference made by Patriot's owner Robert Kraft about the #checksandbalances that #data #analytics provides. It's very clear that the NFL coaches of tomorrow are no longer expected to have cut their teeth - and honed their "gut" as coordinators. Instead, team ownership appears collectively more focused on a #persona that's a steward of a #datadrivendecisions culture. The Lakers just showcased a masterclass in how NOT to recruit top sales leadership. - Offer them limited assets (40 yr old Lebron & injury prone AD aren't winning the west) - Present them with an environment that doesn't match their strengths (Hurly coaches HARD. How would that mesh with this roster?) - Offer mediocre compensation (Lakers offered him less than Monty Williams received with the Pistons) - Get tunnel vision on one candidate and leave yourself with no backup candidates and no leverage in negotiation. If I'm the Lakers GM & ownership, I offer to clean house & load up Hurly with draft picks. I'd also offer him a contract of 10+ years to show that the commitment to the rebuild is real. Alas, just like most SaaS leadership, the Lakers weren't willing to make that investment in a top performer and will now likely be stuck with someone unqualified for the role (JJ Redick).

HAPPY DRAFT DAY! In this sheet, I focused on mock drafts that are division by division drafting vs the rest of the NFL. You will see repeats as each divisions draft is re-run through the simulator. I also included 3 trade hypotheticals with the Patriots, Vikings and Giants. These are teams rumored to possibly move around the board, and you can see the major difference in each version. Lastly, I included all team needs and tiered them by MUST, SHOULD, COULD. All 32 teams are included with every need I think, no matter how important.
