One of the oldest and most famous shipyards in the world has been saved from bankruptcy with a €400 million state bail-out. Germany’s MEYER WERFT GmbH & Co. KG, which has been part of Germany’s shipbuilding industry for more than two centuries, is now 80% owned by the German federal government and the state of Lower Saxony, which jointly bought the shares and delivered a pledge to provide guarantees for existing orders. Blaming its financial woes on the consequences of Covid-19, the Russia/Ukraine war and soaring commodity prices, Meyer Werft said there were orders worth €11 billion on its books until 2031, including 10 cruise ships, a research vessel and four offshore converter platforms. “In addition to the takeover of shares, the federal and state governments are also planning to provide guarantees totalling around one billion euros each,” said a company statement. “These are intended to help ensure the financial stability of the shipyard and guarantee ongoing operations and future projects. These guarantees are a decisive factor in putting the shipyard back on a stable course. Thanks to this solution, the financing banks can also participate in shaping the long-term future of Meyer Werft.” The shipyard does not intend to remain in state ownership forever: it says ’all parties involved are pursuing the goal of transferring Meyer Werft back into private hands in the long term’. “We firmly believe that our company, with its innovative technology and dedicated team, has a future,’ said CEO Bernd Eikens. “We are con-fident that together we will emerge stronger from this crisis and maintain our position as one of the leading companies in international shipbuilding.” “The path to reorganisation is a major milestone,” said CDU parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament, Sebastian Lechner. “At the end of the day, there is an unwavering determination to work together to secure the future of Meyer Werft - to preserve both the site and the jobs in Papenburg as well as the important shipbuilding expertise in Germany.” Keep up to date with the latest industry news on Maritime Journal; https://lnkd.in/ehk8SNk6

If the owners were keen to see the shipyard reinstated but the council wasn't, we could work with that. And if the council wanted to see it reinstated to take advantage of the North Sea industry on its very doorstep but the owners weren't interested, we could work with that too. But when both owners and council are working together to ensure it doesn't get reinstated, then how do you square that circle? This is the utter stupidity of the situation. Buyers for the shipyard have been found and customers for the shipyard want to use it - that much is fact, as we have spoken to them all. So, why is the shipyard still in jeopardy? The UK Government and National Shipbuilding Office launched its £4bn strategy in March 2022 and opened it with this: "The strategy sets out the Government’s commitments to the entire UK shipbuilding enterprise and the rich supply chain that underpins it. Not only is this an ambitious strategy, but one that reflects well over £4bn of investment in UK shipbuilding over the next three years alone." Therefore, compulsory purchasing the Pallion Shipyard should and must be at the extreme top of the NSO's agenda, given what it could do not only for Sunderland and the wider North East, but for the UK as a whole. You say you're committed - then prove it, before the UK loses yet more capacity in such needless fashion. #shipbuilding #shiprepair #offshoreindustry #sunderland #northeastbusiness #northeastjobs

In Part 4 of his series of articles on LOF, Martin Hall considers whether there are any circumstances in which a hull underwriter could argue that their assured shipowner should never have signed an LOF in the first place. More here: https://lnkd.in/eVXyeH_e #Shipping #Marine #Maritime
