🇲🇻🇹🇷 Maldives drives further away from India, accommodates Turkish Warship in Male Following the endorsement of a lucrative agreement with Turkey for acquiring military drones to surveil the open waters in Maldives, Male now welcomes the Turkish warship TCG Kinaliada. This occurrence coincides with a period of strained relations between India and both Maldives and Turkey. 👁 The intention for the Turkish drones is to take over the role of Indian Dornier aircraft in conducting maritime operations and surveillance. The recently elected government in the Maldives, under President Mohamed Muizzu, campaigned on a platform advocating for reduced Indian presence, even leading to the expulsion of 77 Indian military personnel stationed in the island nation. 🇮🇳 After the new government assumed power in the Maldives, its relationship with New Delhi deteriorated significantly. Maldives not only welcomed Chinese ships but also began fostering closer ties with Turkey.

10 Reasons Why Maldives is Important to India The Maldives archipelago comprising 1,200 coral islands is strategically located in the Indian Ocean next to key shipping lanes that ensure uninterrupted energy supplies to countries like China, Japan, and India. Since China began sending naval ships to the Indian Ocean, Maldives' significance has steadily grown and now it's at the heart of international geopolitics. As the pre-eminent South Asian power and a 'net security provider' in the Indian Ocean region, India needs to cooperate with Maldives in security and defence sectors. Finally, there are 25,000 Indian nationals in Maldives, making it crucial for India to maintain a close relationship with the country.

Maldives has been featured in recent Indian national news as a diplomatic crisis has erupted between India and Maldives. Moreover, the current government is famous for its alignment with China, posing a security threat to Indian interests in the region. Amidst this, it's crucial to revisit a lesser-known chapter in our history – Operation Cactus. In 1988, around 80 mercenaries from Sri Lanka, supported by a Maldivian business leader Abdullah Luthufi, discreetly landed in Maldives disguised as civilians. They swiftly seized control of the capital and key government structures. Facing the imminent coup, President Gayoom urgently sought military aid from nations like the UK, USA, Pakistan, and Singapore, but all denied the request for various reasons. In a last-ditch effort, the president turned to India, and within 16 hours of the call, Operation Cactus was initiated. Indian paratroopers, on an Ilyushin II-76 aircraft, swiftly landed in Maldives, securing the airport and restoring control to President Gayoom. The Indian navy deployed INS Betwa and INS Godavari, capturing the fleeing mercenaries, bringing an end to this historical saga. A fascinating glimpse into our history that many may not be familiar with. 🙂 #OperationCactus #IndianHistory #india #indianarmy #indiannavy #indianairforce #indianarmedforces
