𝑬𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆, 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉| Bald and bold or Wig ? Back in February 2024, my life changed completely. I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and nothing could have prepared me for what was to come—physically, emotionally, and mentally. One of the hardest adjustments was something most of us take for granted: my hair. As an Indian woman, you never really imagine yourself without hair—it’s such a big part of who we are. Losing it was one of the most visible reminders of my battle with cancer. When it started to fall, it took time to accept, and even longer to embrace who I was becoming through this journey. Now that chemo and surgery are behind me, I’m trying to find my way back to “normal.” Not that I stopped living during treatment—some days, I wore a wig to pretend everything was okay, to make things seem normal. Other days, I’d just go out as I was—bald, exposed, but still me. Through it all, one thing never changed: my confidence. And now, here I am—at this strange crossroads. Should I embrace being bald or go back to wearing a wig? It might seem like a small decision, but for me, it’s a big one. This journey has taught me that my strength isn’t in my hair, or how I look—it’s in my heart, my mind, and my spirit. I’m learning that it’s okay to not have all the answers and to take things one day at a time. To anyone going through something similar, I want to say this: It’s okay to feel unsure, and it’s okay to take your time. There’s no right or wrong way to deal with change. On a Mountaintop - the sun’s rays are stronger at higher elevations — UV radiation exposure increases 4 to 5 percent with every 1,000 feet above sea level. The threat is even greater in winter climes, when UV rays reflect off of ice and snow, hitting your skin a second time. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen at least every couple of hours, and cover up. (Intro link to what this is all about in comments) 6 What it feels like to have breasts Most women I know will have something to complain about regarding their breasts. Too small, too big (more rare), too saggy, left and right isn’t the same, or there will be resentments about their functionality; they hurt before our periods, they bounce when we do sports, the look funny when we bend over or they fall out of our bras when we lay down. Some might resent that they are there at all and bind them to make them unnoticeable. And noticeable is maybe the keyword here. Breasts gets notices whether we like it or not. They are being noticed when they start forming, they are noticed when we wear a t-shirt, especially if we somehow end up in a wet t-shirt, which believes me, does happen. If you have large breasts standing up straight means that your breasts will meet the world several seconds before the rest of you arrive, and you might not actually want to stand up so straight after all. Too many have experienced people touching their breasts in ways that wasn’t wanted. Not cool. Breasts are also given many names, some aren’t very nice. Size will change together with firmness and sensitivity throughout the cycle. Often bigger and firmer before the period. If you have cyst this effect will be enhanced as they fill up with water according to your changing hormones. A delicate ebb and flow. But at the same time having nothing that will make people look, aka very small breasts, is also challenging. Though no-one will enjoy having someone do the elevator gaze on you, having small breasts or some that are bigger but not “lifting off” is often a reason for disliking our own breasts. So much so that: “The latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show almost 300,000 patients underwent breast augmentation in 2022, a 4% gain over 2019 and 143,364 breast lift procedures were performed in 2022, a whopping 30% increase over 2019”. It seems we feel we need to “fix” our breasts more and more while the world likes the idea of breasts more and more. Maybe the world hasn’t quite understood breasts, but only wants to replicate a cookie cutter beauty ideal. Luckily breasts aren’t only grievances, they are also able to give much pleasure! Breasts can be anything from kind of numb to painfully sensitive and some enjoyable place in the middle. They can be decorated and sculpted in bras, revealed, teased, caressed and playful in endless other ways. All to the benefit of us women, but… probably also to people we allow to see and touch them ;-) Of course you can’t say breasts without thinking about breastfeeding and breast cancer but we get to that later. 

🚨Men are in danger!🚨 🚨Seriously, they are!🚨 👩🏼⚕️As a Consultant Dermatologist, I have diagnosed melanomas on men’s backs (as an incidental finding!) on several occasions, when they attend for something completely unrelated. ‼️Men comprised most new skin cancer cases worldwide in 2020 (men: n=896,192, 59%; women: n=626,516, 41%). ‼️Despite there being scientific evidence that consistent topical sunscreen use aids in the prevention of most skin cancers, the vast majority of men often neglect sunscreen compared to women! ➡️Traditional advertising for male-focused skin care is mostly related to beard care, razors, and shaving products, and men historically were less likely to be receptive to targeted marketing content overall. ➡️A study with an aim to evaluate male skin care social media on Instagram and highlight any potential gaps in content related to sun safety and sunscreen use was conducted. ❗️Sunscreen comprised only 4.7% (14/300) of all topics or products promoted, while skin care routines were the most common (83/300, 27.7%; ❗️While the literature has suggested that men are motivated to use sunscreen due to prior knowledge of skin cancer risk reduction and a desire to appear younger, Instagram content related to sunscreen failed to address these factors. ⚠️Shifting the focus of male skin care advertising may lead to greater interest in preventative measures and mitigate rising rates of skin cancer morbidity and mortality in men. ⚠️Coupling sun protection and sunscreen promotion with the already substantial content on antiaging products may be promising, as sunscreen is known to have antiaging benefits. ⚠️Dermatologists play an important role in social media outreach and recommendations to men about sunscreen use, in conjunction with exploiting the more subtle marketing tactics that demonstrated prior success with male consumers.
