Recently, we encountered a fascinating challenge at work, where we needed to efficiently handle the creation and subsequent updating of thousands of documents in a MongoDB database through our API. While the creation part was effeciently managed using batch processing and insertMany() function, we stumbled upon a significant bottleneck during the update process. Initially, we attempted to tackle the updates using the promises approach, leveraging Promise.all() to handle multiple update queries asynchronously. However, despite our expectations, MongoDB seemed to process only 4-5 documents at once, resulting in an unexpectedly long processing time of 15-30 minutes for 10k - 20k documents. At first, we suspected a problem with our MongoDB server configuration, especially since we had recently migrated from MongoDB Atlas to deploying our own MongoDB server on GCP, even though our server configuration was comparable to an M40 Atlas cluster. So we tested the code on a local MongoDB server but encountered the same results. We also increased the minimum number of connections in the connection pool to 50, but the bottleneck remained unresolved. This led me and my colleague Kritebh Lagan Bibhakar to explore alternative approaches, and after rigorous testing, we identified two key optimizations that dramatically improved our update operations' efficiency. Firstly, we introduced batch processing for updates, preparing and executing a single bulkWrite() operation for a batch of 750 documents instead of individual asynchronous updates. This change alone significantly reduced the overall operation time to under 30 seconds for updating 10k documents, highlighting the efficiency of bulkWrite() in update scenarios. Additionally, we optimized our data retrieval process by minimizing the number of database calls. Instead of querying MongoDB for each document's updated information individually, we modified our aggregation pipeline to fetch details for all documents in the batch together. This optimization drastically reduced the processing time to under 15 seconds, marking a remarkable improvement from the initial 15-30 minutes. These optimizations streamlined our MongoDB operations and highlighted the importance of understanding database behavior and leveraging appropriate methods for efficient data handling. #optimization #mongodb #asynchronous
