My summer internship with the Mayor's Office of the City of Detroit has come to an end, and I wanted to share some of my major takeaways!!!
1. A good summer internship can help you determine your areas of interest and future career options. During this internship, I discovered that I enjoy working on real-time policy problems and projects that address complex urban development issues.
2. When starting an internship program, it's important to be open to exploring areas beyond your main focus and be willing to learn from any task given to you as it will assist you in being a team player.
3. After working in research and academics for the past few years, this internship has taught me how to apply my knowledge to the practical world. It has also helped me learn about additional in-depth steps and procedures that are required to be successful in the field of practice.
4. Despite being in the field of urban planning, I wasn't fully aware of the importance of project management certifications. Now, I am determined to find ways to accomplish this.
5. A good summer internship experience relies on having a supportive mentor/supervisor, and team who are willing to engage you and help you progress in your career. I am fortunate to have received guidance from you, Andie Taverna. You have been an inspiration!
I would like to conclude by expressing my gratitude to the City of Detroit team for choosing me for this position and supporting my career growth.
