Is Your Nonprofit an "Institution?"
Many nonprofit founders, CEOs and Boards dream of the day that the newer, smaller nonprofit they serve becomes an institution--- an organization that will always be there, growing larger, increasing its reach and visibility and virtually indestructible. There are many, mostly national and international nonprofits that come to mind for you I am sure.
Is this really what you want as a leader for your nonprofit?
For one thing, the concerns and questions over the costs for operations of more 'institutional' nonprofits tend to be of much greater frequency. and intensity coming from donors and prospects. The history, visibility and appearance of financial stability of most tend to be excellent. But, what about the organizations' flexibility to change when the times and opportunities demand it?
How about the NPOs' impact per dollar spent? There is often more bureaucracy within larger, more institutional nonprofits. They can be 'top-heavy,' weighed down with more administrative staff than needed to get the job done. This is costly! Smaller nonprofits can often do more good work with fewer resources. The larger nonprofits can learn from them!
Let's consider a national nonprofit's Chicago affiliate programs. Are there smaller, unaffiliated nonprofits in Chicago that do similar work, that run more efficiently while devoting more of their time to serving the Cause and solving the problems. You bet there are!
Being bigger and more widely known doesn't always translate into better results for nonprofits. A hunger for wanting to do more good most often does.
