This is your reminder to use your voice and stand up for yourself in the face of bullies. Rebecca Ferguson, the star of 'Dune', 'Mission Impossible', and 'The Greatest Showman' revealed on my podcast 'Reign' that a former co-star once "screamed" at her on set, leaving her in tears and later, after being told there was nothing that could be done by producers, she refused to work with them. I have had so many conversations since this podcast was released this week about this kind of behaviour and it is clear screaming at someone, and berating someone, in front of colleagues is common place in many work places. In some industries it is clear it is part of the culture and people rarely step in when they witness it. So why isn’t more done to educate people on this behaviour and equipt people with the skills to stand up to bullies in a safe way? I hope this interview will inspire at least one person to stand up to a bully or encourage a bystander to call out such behaviour when they witness it. Like Rebecca shows in the podcast, when you push through fear and use your voice there is another level of self-confidence on the other side. This beautiful conversation between Prentis Hemphill and Maurice Mitchell was one of the best I've been lucky enough to catch lately. I'm grateful that thoughtful, brilliant, and beautiful people chose to share these kinds of conversations with us via podcasts. There were enough gems and it provoked enough thinking that I'll likely revisit it again. A few highlights for me: - The acknowledgement that joy is also missed when you turn away from the suffering of others. - The analogy of American Ninja Warrior and capitalism ("Why is there a moat?!") - Seeing the principle of Line of Sight (#emergentlearning) in the description of tactics and vision. - Reflecting on safe spaces (HBCUs in this example), and that they don't diminish the ability to navigate other spaces, but provide the confidence to engage in other spaces. - A couple of quotes: "one way of thinking about ideology is it's like it's a big story that helps you understand where you are and where you're going... If you're not clear about which ideological tradition and which strategy, then you're probably inside of somebody else's strategy and you're probably advancing somebody else's ideological vision.” “I've rarely found a binary that actually reflects my experience of reality, or a binary where the people that I care deeply about don't happen to be on the bottom of that.” Check it out. https://lnkd.in/eg_rQmxG

🎙️ Vocal Fry, the 'modish voice crackle' – it's a thing! Ever noticed that distinctive vocal fry, that 'je ne sais quoi' in the voices of stars like Britney Spears, the entire Kardashian clan, James Bond, and yes, even Sam Altman in an interview with Bill Gates? The burning question: Is it intentional, or just a spontaneous vocal quirk? For me, it feels more like a trend, a fashion statement people adopt to exude a certain charisma, a 'Je-ne-sais-quoi' as if they're effortlessly cool about it. I'm already a big fan of Lieven Scheire's Nerdland podcast, but this episode was extra interesting for me as a voice therapist / speaker coach. They delve into this vocal phenomenon, unraveling the mysteries behind these vocal sounds. Take a listen to the conversation between Bill Gates and Sam Altman (I'll put the link in the comments); but consider this fair warning ⚠ – you might develop an extra sensor, tuning into vocal fry everywhere you go. But whether you find it irritating or appreciate its unique charm apparently depends on your age. Count me in the first category – mega irritating.
