Today was James Kibblewhite' first day back full-time after a year of side employment! #1 lesson I learned 🧠 : Don't "build a company" until you have sustainable revenue. We shouldn't consider ourselves "CEO" and "CTO" at this stage. My ONLY job is to get clients, and James' only job is to get the software ready to be used. Everything else is a distraction that should wait until there is an actual company to build. This is challenging because we both love figuring out what can make our company an amazing workplace. We want to introduce effective infrastructure that reduces unnecessary meetings and frustrating experiences with colleagues. In my event business, nothing pleased me more than reading a nonfiction book and immediately implementing new ideas. I was very proud of my "speed of implementation." This did, in fact, lead to great systems, great teamwork, and an amazing product. However, we expanded the business to other cities and products based on this success, when we should have ONLY done so once we had truly figured out sales. Any expansion before that only meant more systems were needed and more communication skills were required to handle a distressed situation as revenue wasn't growing as fast as needed. I'm happy I learned this lesson on my own dime, as now that the first batch of investor money has hit our accounts, I get the opportunity to be an even better steward of that responsibility. If you could "demote" yourself to only one task/role that you know would move the needle the most, what would that shift look like? Let me know in the comments. This was huge for me, share if you think someone needs this insight too ❤️

The rigid folds of the corporate mindset are really showing how out-dated of an environment they create. Our work as a whole has shifted so much since Kinsey et al set this up that we should really look at a new model with flexibility for our people built in to all the processes that go into the product or service that we deliver. Optimizing for workers cannot be shoved into an excel spreadsheet. These are all great points of reflection in the article.
"I miss most of the people and none of the processes."

Everyone is building their initial opinion of you as the CEO early in your employment, including people you have worked with for years. Making a good first impression will convey a lot about how you plan to lead differently from the previous CEO and how you have led in other positions, as well as the chance for renewal you envision for the company.

“Till X happened, though I knew I had to be visible, self-promote, etc. I still wasn’t doing it because: A) I didn’t know how, and B) Though I knew not doing it was seriously hurting my career growth, I didn’t want to come across as sleazy or bragging. And then X happened. I now know how to do self-promotion and networking well, and I am visible and growing constantly. I have the tools, the frameworks and the confidence. Thank you for being the X-factor, Meera.” That’s what my client, who is a senior leader at one of the world’s beloved firms told me today. It's May 1 and Micky so kindly reminded our team we're 1/3 of the way through the year 🤯 A good chance to pause, reassess, and keep moving forward. The current task ⬇️ Rearrange workloads and make room for additional clients. Easier said than done. In fact, my job today feels different than it did this time last month. It's a good thing, it means we're growing. The process is an adjustment for everyone, but when the 1/2 mark rolls around, this task will be sorted (🤞🏻) and we'll move on to the next. It's a never-ending cycle when you're part of a growing business. What a great challenge.
