Last week marked my last working day at the biggest e-commerce platform in SouthEast Asia. I was (and still am) filled with immense gratitude and pride especially to trailblaze Shopee Indonesia Research & Insight Team. The team is lean in size, but it’s mighty (you know who you are and you all should be proud of yourself). It was of course require a lot of hard work, but for me it was a really fun ride. Definitely is a five-year worth remember and reflect for the rest of my life. When I was in Shopee, I observe that the mindset of the people is really what sets them apart. They play to win. They are problem hunters and solvers at the same time and they do it well. Their drive is bigger than their fear. I am honored to ever be part of it, for all the lessons, it was all are invaluable in shaping my experience and career trajectory. A little back story from me, this is actually a living-in-the-dream moment. A few years before I started working for the company, I told one of my acquaintances that I was dreaming of working as a market researcher for a big tech company in Indonesia (no specific company in mind at that time), I simply just thought it will be fun. My acquaintance at that time negated that, said that big tech usually only has research team at the headquarters (which most of it not in Indonesia at that time), chances were slim. Long story short, a very valuable lesson learned here: never underestimate your own dream even when no one believes in it. Have a really good relationship with yourself and trust yourself. And as a Muslim, I can only thank Allah for writing this plan for me. This is not possible without His decree. The only way to go is up, Shopee! 📈 === As life stage changes, priorities shift. I am here to also announce that I will be working solo for awhile as I need time flexibility for myself and my family at the moment. Those who have the needs to collaborate for market research projects (as a consultant/moderator/analyst), is more than welcomed to slide me a message to enquire. Big chunk of my experience is definitely in business research, but I also done public policy-related topics such as energy-related research, macroeconomy in general, and community/reforestation issue. ❤️

How the Digital Age is Reshaping Culture in Indonesia Indonesia’s digital economy is not just about convenience; it’s about a profound shift in how we live and interact. Platforms like Gojek, Shopee, and Tokopedia have seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, changing behaviors that used to be very time consuming and now only take a few minutes to accomplish. Ordering meals, sending parcels, or shopping online with just a few clicks has become so routine that we hardly notice how revolutionary it really is. On a recent trip to Canada, I found myself reflecting on this cultural transformation. Time and again, I missed the ease of simply ordering food or sending an item to a friend—all from the comfort of my sofa. These services, which we take for granted in Indonesia, are far from universal. In Canada, the barriers to replicating this digital convenience are significant. The freezing winters alone pose challenges for delivery drivers, and higher labor costs make the affordability we enjoy in Indonesia difficult to match. Yet, these differences are not just about economics or weather—they highlight how culture and local conditions shape the adoption of technology. Indonesia’s relatively low labor costs and warm climate have enabled platforms like Gojek to flourish. But what’s even more fascinating is how quickly these innovations have altered our culture. In just a few years, we’ve transformed the way we shop, pay, and even do business. The digital age has redefined convenience, and in doing so, it has reshaped our habits and expectations. The next time you open Gojek to order lunch or send a parcel, pause for a moment. Three years ago, I was a Shopee user. But now, it has changed. Last week marked my last day at Shopee! After careful consideration, I decided to help companies with structured problem solving and presentations full-time. - This essential skillset is crucial for all professionals and companies, and it will become increasingly important in the years ahead. Back to Shopee—three years ago, my wife and I were regular, loyal users of the platform. - I never thought I would work there.  - However, when Shopee approached me, I was thrilled by the opportunity. It turned out to be one of the best learning phases of my life.  If you want to know why Shopee has been so successful, here are my experiences: 1. Back to the Roots with a New Perspective Today brings a moment of profound reflection. Securing a new space at the Makassar Industrial Area (KIMA), a hub for Shopee parcel deliveries to be distributed throughout the city, is not merely a new step in my career. This place evokes the atmosphere of Port Klang—a nostalgic reminder of the industrial and manufacturing world that was a part of my life for eight years. This experience reflects how life’s journey often leads us back to our roots, though in a different form. Back then, eight years were spent amidst the hustle and bustle of manufacturing; now, even though I am no longer directly involved in the same field, the spirit of hard work and contributing to the distribution chain remains alive. Here lies a great lesson: every experience, whether in the past or present, is interconnected. The industrial world once shaped my discipline, efficiency, and dedication, which now serve as valuable tools to face new challenges in the delivery industry. Another insight is that longing is not just about memories but also about acknowledging the values we once learned. This new environment is a field to apply all the lessons of the past in simpler yet equally meaningful ways. This note serves as a reminder that no journey is ever wasted.
