Another day, another challenge at Shopee! We usually don’t meet Shopee sellers face to face a lot, but today our team presented on the penalty points system to a group of selected Shopee sellers. It’s not the presentation part that scared me, but rather managing the questions. When we know a lot of details and technicalities, it’s hard to discern what should we say vs not when answering certain questions. As much as I hate vague answers, it always amazes me how people can do corporate speak: avoiding direct answers, deflect the questions with general statements, and being politically correct with no exact yes/no. Not that I inspire to be one; but it’s definitely useful in some situations.

Last week marked my last working day at the biggest e-commerce platform in SouthEast Asia. I was (and still am) filled with immense gratitude and pride especially to trailblaze Shopee Indonesia Research & Insight Team. The team is lean in size, but it’s mighty (you know who you are and you all should be proud of yourself). It was of course require a lot of hard work, but for me it was a really fun ride. Definitely is a five-year worth remember and reflect for the rest of my life. When I was in Shopee, I observe that the mindset of the people is really what sets them apart. They play to win. They are problem hunters and solvers at the same time and they do it well. Their drive is bigger than their fear. I am honored to ever be part of it, for all the lessons, it was all are invaluable in shaping my experience and career trajectory. A little back story from me, this is actually a living-in-the-dream moment. A few years before I started working for the company, I told one of my acquaintances that I was dreaming of working as a market researcher for a big tech company in Indonesia (no specific company in mind at that time), I simply just thought it will be fun. My acquaintance at that time negated that, said that big tech usually only has research team at the headquarters (which most of it not in Indonesia at that time), chances were slim. Long story short, a very valuable lesson learned here: never underestimate your own dream even when no one believes in it. Have a really good relationship with yourself and trust yourself. And as a Muslim, I can only thank Allah for writing this plan for me. This is not possible without His decree. The only way to go is up, Shopee! 📈 === As life stage changes, priorities shift. I am here to also announce that I will be working solo for awhile as I need time flexibility for myself and my family at the moment. Those who have the needs to collaborate for market research projects (as a consultant/moderator/analyst), is more than welcomed to slide me a message to enquire. Big chunk of my experience is definitely in business research, but I also done public policy-related topics such as energy-related research, macroeconomy in general, and community/reforestation issue. ❤️

2025 will be one of the most challenging years in Thai's business. Companies can no longer rely solely on short-term tactics in today's unpredictable environment. The shift towards long-term strategic planning and future-focused decision-making is no longer optional—it's critical for survival and growth. In today's LIVE, I have a chance to discuss with Shopee the potential solution SME can do to survive in this economy. It’s clear that agility alone won’t be enough; we need to pair it with foresight and a willingness to innovate. How can Thai businesses turn this competition into an opportunity to grow stronger? I’d love to hear your thoughts and strategies for thriving in this dynamic environment. 📌 https://lnkd.in/gt-XHtSC

How Did Shopee Navigate Challenges in Its Early Days? The Humble Beginnings Shopee’s journey began under the umbrella of Sea Limited, a company initially focused on gaming through its subsidiary, Garena. Forrest Li, the visionary behind Sea Limited, saw an untapped opportunity in the Southeast Asian e-commerce market. Despite the presence of heavyweights like Lazada, backed by Alibaba, Li was not deterred. He recognized the diverse and culturally rich landscape of Southeast Asia as fertile ground for a new type of e-commerce platform. In its early days, Shopee faced numerous challenges. The Southeast Asian market was fragmented, with varying consumer preferences and behaviours across different countries. Additionally, the e-commerce landscape was already crowded with established players. However, Li’s foresight and understanding of the market nuances allowed Shopee to navigate these initial hurdles. The company focused on understanding local cultures and consumer needs, tailoring its approach to each specific market. This localization strategy was a key differentiator that set Shopee apart from its competitors. One of the most fascinating aspects of working in media is seeing how the same strategy can play out so differently across markets. It’s a constant learning curve and a reminder of how important it is to stay curious and adaptable - In China, platforms like WeChat and Alipay have revolutionized consumer journeys. Events such as Singles’ Day on Tmall showcase the fusion of commerce and entertainment, driving exceptional engagement. - Thailand's utilization of LINE goes beyond messaging, evolving into a hub for e-commerce and more. Understanding local tools like this enhances audience connections. - Platforms like Grab and Foodpanda in Singapore and Southeast Asia are transforming consumer behaviors, encompassing food delivery, payments, and travel within their super-app model, integral to daily life. - Indonesia leads a mobile-first revolution with apps like Tokopedia and Gojek. The country's digitally savvy population showcases how local consumer behaviors influence global digital trends. - India's diverse market sees platforms like Zepto, and BlinkIt redefine shopping experiences. Quick-commerce platforms cater to the urban demand for convenience and instant gratification, complemented by regional content creators shaping brand narratives. Global strategies set the direction, and it’s the local nuances that bring them to life. Each market teaches its own lessons, and for me, it’s a privilege to continuously learn from the distinct and dynamic landscapes that make up the global media ecosystem. Would love to hear thoughts! #MediaInsights #Consumers #China #SoutheastAsia #India #Indonesia

𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐚, 𝐁𝐚𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧, 𝐆𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐤, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭? The recent announcement of Gojek's withdrawal from the Vietnamese market, with their last day of operation set for September 16th, has sent shockwaves through the industry. However, for many market analysts, this development was not entirely unexpected. Decision Lab's Connected Consumer report for Q2 2024 had already highlighted Gojek's declining performance, with the company losing approximately 4 percentage points in its penetration rate and experiencing a significant drop in its preference score (measuring the BUMO of customers) among Gen Z for car services and across all three generations for bike services. The Vietnamese ride-hailing market has become increasingly competitive, especially with the entry of homegrown app Xanh SM. The Q2 2024 data revealed the ups and downs of the top services, showcasing a dynamic and rapidly evolving market. Key players are vying for market share, while consumer preferences appear to be shifting towards the quality of services rather than being swayed by good marketing schemes alone. However, it is crucial to recognise that this shift in consumer preferences is not limited to the ride-hailing sector. As consumers become more cautious with their spending, brands across various industries will face challenges in maintaining growth and staying ahead of the competition. Perhaps, it's time for companies to reassess their brand health and identify the most effective strategies and sources of growth for the upcoming period. 👉 Download Decision Lab's Connected Consumer report for Q2 2024 to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current ride-hailing market and other industries: https://bit.ly/4dPK64X ❓ Leave a comment down below on what topic/industry that you would like me to analyse further. #DecisionLab #Gojek #Vietnam #consumer #brandhealth #ConnectedConsumer #ridehailling

Three years ago, I was a Shopee user. But now, it has changed. Last week marked my last day at Shopee! After careful consideration, I decided to help companies with structured problem solving and presentations full-time. - This essential skillset is crucial for all professionals and companies, and it will become increasingly important in the years ahead. Back to Shopee—three years ago, my wife and I were regular, loyal users of the platform. - I never thought I would work there. - However, when Shopee approached me, I was thrilled by the opportunity. It turned out to be one of the best learning phases of my life. If you want to know why Shopee has been so successful, here are my experiences: 1. Data-Driven Culture: - No decision is made without supporting facts, even the small ones. - All data is centralized (single source of truth), and the business intelligence team plays a critical role in daily business decisions. 2. Smart and High-Ownership People: - The people at Shopee are smart, humble, possess a growth mindset, and, most importantly, have high ownership of their work. - The top executives strongly demonstrate this character, having been there since Shopee's early years. - This culture extends to the middle and junior levels, showcasing the best of Gen Z. 3. Leading a Large and Critical Team: - I managed the largest team of my career, larger than some entire companies. Now, as I move on, I am grateful to have connected with the key people behind the app I used three years ago—from top executives to team members! I wish Shopee and the people behind it all the best in the future. Thank you for everything! --- 1) [Corporate Workshop] For readers interested in bringing my workshop to your company, feel free to message me. -Explore overwhelming feedback for my problem-solving and structured presentation workshop, through the “Visit my website” link in my profile. -This includes testimonials from the Senior Executive Vice President of a major Indonesian private equity firm and a logistics tech CEO, among others. 2) [Private Class] Next session is on Saturday, July 20, 2024 -Offline/In-person, 9 am - 6 pm. -Message me if you’re interested (limited seats) Don't forget to like, share, and follow me for the latest insights on #StructuredThinking #ProblemSolving and #StructuredPresentation | #AsepTamar

Title: A Lesson Learned with Shopee's Auto-Cancellation Feature As a seller on Shopee, my goal is always to ensure that every order is handled with care and professionalism. However, I recently ran into an unexpected challenge when an order for one of our industrial-grade hardware devices was auto-canceled due to a feature I hadn’t noticed before. It led to an awkward situation with my client, which wasn’t the experience I wanted for them or for MBS Technology Solution. The devices we sell require burn-in testing, configuration, and thorough QA checks to ensure they meet the highest standards of safety and quality. These processes take time, which isn’t always compatible with immediate shipping expectations. Thankfully, after reaching out to Shopee customer support, I was advised to set future items as "pre-order," allowing us the necessary time to properly prepare the devices before shipment. I appreciate Shopee's team for their professional advice in helping me avoid this issue in the future. For sellers of specialized products like us, this was a valuable reminder to align our processes with the platform’s features to ensure smoother transactions. A big thank you to Shopee for guiding us through this! #SellerExperience #QualityAssurance #IndustrialHardware #MBSTechnology #ShopeeSellerTips #CustomerCare #BurnInTest #QAProcess #ProfessionalAdvice #TechSolutions #PreOrderStrategy #SmallBusinessGrowth #ShopeeBusiness #HardwareTesting #SellerJourney
