AWS CEO Matt Garman says most developers can stop coding soon as AI takes over In a leaked recording, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman told employees that software engineers may have to develop other skills when AI takes over most coding tasks. Garman shared his thoughts on the topic during an internal fireside chat in June, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Business Insider. He noted, “It just means that each of us has to get more in tune with what our customers need and what the actual end thing is that we're going to try to go build, because that's going to be more and more of what the work is as opposed to sitting down and actually writing code.”

IS THE FUTURE: JOBLESS? In a leaked recording, Amazon cloud chief tells employees that most developers could stop coding soon as AI takes over Software engineers may have to develop other skills soon as artificial intelligence takes over many coding tasks. That's according to Amazon Web Services' CEO, Matt Garman , who shared his thoughts on the topic during an internal fireside chat held in June, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Business Insider. "If you go forward 24 months from now, or some amount of time — I can't exactly predict where it is — it's possible that most developers are not coding," said Garman, who became AWS's CEO in June. "Coding is just kind of like the language that we talk to computers. It's not necessarily the skill in and of itself," the executive said. "The skill in and of itself is like, how do I innovate? How do I go build something that's interesting for my end users to use?" https://lnkd.in/e2zDNxPh

Amazon Web Services (AWS) tends to do things a bit differently. Code assistance, like its Amazon CodeWhisperer, is no different. Yes, it follows some familiar industry patterns that Copilot may have started, but CodeWhisperer has a distinctly Amazon flavor. As Doug Seven, GM of Amazon CodeWhisperer and director of software development for Amazon Q, at AWS, told me in an interview, "One of the benefits of CodeWhisperer is we abstract all of that generative AI science." That focus on relieving the "undifferentiated heavy lifting" of software development is a guiding principle for Seven and the CodeWhisperer team, resulting in a product that gives developers the power of AI without making them think about AI. Instead they get to focus on writing code. In our interview for InfoWorld, we talked about how software development is changing, the nature of documentation in a GenAI world, and more. I had a great discussion with Matt Asay about the current and future state of #generatieveai in software development, and how tools like Amazon #CodeWhisperer and #AmazonQ help developers get more done, faster. I believe we are just scratching the surface today. I am excited for the future and how we will empower software development teams through AI.

Let’s take a moment to remember CodeWhisperer, Amazon’s AI-powered assistive coding tool. As of today, CodeWhisperer is no longer functioning—sort of. Q Developer, a member of Amazon’s Q family of business-oriented generative AI chatbots, is now CodeWhisperer. Q Developer is also part of the newly announced Q Business. Accessible via AWS, Q Developer assists developers with various tasks they encounter in their daily work, such as debugging and upgrading applications, troubleshooting, and conducting security scans. It offers similar functionality to CodeWhisperer. #amazon #aws #qdeveloper #codewhisperer #eltrys
Now renamed Q Developer, Amazon CodeWhisperer is growing in capabilities.

✨ A few weeks ago I posted about how useful I was finding Amazon CodeWhisperer for Command Line (https://lnkd.in/eEyrpAS5). It's very cool to see some of the service's other functionality having such a tangible impact on our customers like BT. 🤖 #AWS is unlocking the power of #AI to accelerate efficiency by sharing coding suggestions in real-time with programmers. ⏱️ Thanks to our #GenAI companion, Amazon CodeWhisperer, AWS is helping engineers finish coding tasks faster than ever by automating tasks deemed tedious and repetitive. #AWS client BT Group recently reported that the tool has been made available to over 1,200 engineers across its business and helped to automate 12% of time-consuming tasks during the first four months of use. Learn more about what this #AI milestone means for BT Group’s business and engineers across the industry.
BT Digital's engineers accept 37% of AWS' suggested GenAI coding
