📌Over the weekend... We had an in-house training for the team members and volunteers at our NGO. The whole essence of the training was centered around fostering teamwork and setting us up for success for the new year, both as individuals and as an organization. Two young, vibrant, and phenomenal individuals were invited to speak with the team, and I thought I would share a few of their words. Adedamola David ALADESE spoke extensively on the topic 'leading self.' He emphasized that the following must be in place for you to be able to lead yourself: a. You must be bold and courageous. b. You must be self-disciplined: attitude is everything. c. You must be self-aware: God has created you to dominate, so wherever you find yourself, locate one thing that's missing and try to put yourself there. d. You must cultivate good relationships with people. The second speaker, Theresa Odey spoke on 'strategic teamwork and impacts.' Below are a few points from her session: a. As individuals and organizations, you must be proactive in all you do. You must make that change instead of waiting for others to do so. b. Everyone must elevate their capacity: capacity should not only be on the team lead. c. Prepare yourself: As individuals and an organization, you must always be prepared. d. Team members should take ownership: Don't always wait for the team lead on what should be done. Other points include having good communication among team members, setting goals, building trust, encouraging each other, and leveraging each other's strengths. It was a mind-blowing session. As individuals and an NGO, each point resonates with us and will keep us going for the year. How often should an in-house training be done in an organization to achieve better results? About four years ago, I called my friend and cried my eyes out. I had just been disqualified from a pitch competition simply because I submitted to another email address. Although a seemingly small mistake, it cost me a lot. I had put a lot of time and energy into preparing for it and I didn't even get the chance to share it. My mentor sat me down and told me - "It's not just about doing the work but doing it excellently and that meant with no loose ends." That was a very teachable moment for me. As a young professional, it's not only about what you get done but how you get it done. I am not yet perfect, but I have improved a lot. There are things that I do to ensure that I don't skip any important information in my work. Here are few tips that helped me; 1. Mindful Review: Take the time to thoroughly review your work, checking for any potential errors or omissions before submission. Develop a habit of double-checking critical elements, especially in tasks that involve documentation or presentations. 2. Create Checklists: Utilize checklists to ensure that every component of a task is completed without overlooking any details. 3. Feedback Seeker: Actively seek feedback from mentors or colleagues to gain additional perspectives on your work and identify potential areas for improvement. 4. Learn from Mistakes: Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. Analyze what went wrong and implement strategies to avoid similar errors in the future. 5. Prioritize Accuracy: Prioritize accuracy over speed. Focus on delivering precise and error-free work, even if it takes a bit longer. I wish I didn't have to learn this the hard way, but I am grateful I did when I did because it could have cost me an even greater opportunity. I am even more grateful for the mentor who showed me what I needed to improve on. It helped me a lot in the course of my career and is still helping me. Are you afraid to ask for help? I used to think that asking for help was scary, and a sign of weakness. But the more I reached out, the more I realized that people are often more willing to lend a hand than we expect - whether it was advice, fresh perspective, or sometimes just a simple nudge in the right direction. Faith in humanity restored! During a recent meet-up with my current and ex-mentees (Nidchakul (Jen) C., Zhu Peng, A Priyadarshini), we discussed the topic of networking. The "How, Where, When," and even the dreaded "What can I offer?" came up. The truth is, sincerity makes all the difference. When you approach conversations with genuine curiosity, without an agenda, it shows. And that sincerity? People can feel it. I’ve found that some of my most interesting discussions on topics like People (Abhilasha Krishnan), AI (Gil Goldman), and Preparing for the Future (Anna Joke Breimer Bharati) were born from shared interests. There are countless ways to connect—platforms like Singapore Leaders Network (SGLN), Mentoring SG, Tomorrow College, and more are out there. Specifically to the students in NTU, Ryan Hong runs a Level Up! program matching students with mentors twice a year (This is also a platform for networking!). So, if you can imagine it, there's a space for it. At the end of the day, networking isn’t about how many business cards (does anyone still use those? I mainly use the LinkedIn QR code feature these days) or Social Media connections you have. It’s about the meaningful relationships you build and nurture over time. I inspire inclusion by modeling how we are unique and have much to contribute to this conversation. ➕ What advice would you give to individuals who struggle with self-promotion in order to gain recognition for their achievements? Start small and start internally. Focus on reminding yourself and tracking your achievements. Each day, I write down three wins, and it helps to reinforce that I am making progress. Sometimes I say them outloud to myself. I have that list beside me if I ever feel stuck or beat myself up for a mistake I made. It is so easy for us to get caught up in the negative that we must actively build routines to remind ourselves we are incredible. ➕Can you share any personal experiences or anecdotes where embracing self-promotion positively impacted your career trajectory or opportunities? I would not be where I am today without being involved in #IAmRemarkable. I have worked for myself for over 5 years and needed to learn how to put myself out there in an authentic and genuine way. Hosting #IAmRemarkable workshops reminds me of the importance of self-promotion and that it starts internally. Through being part of this initiative, I have built amazing relationships and a six-figure leadership-focused consultancy. I am not only more confident sharing my values and work, but I am even more confident advocating for myself and setting boundaries. +What's one feedback you received from a participant that will stay with you forever? A parent who joined the session told me that the workshop made her reflect on how differently she treats her daughter and son regarding 'self-promotion' and sharing their successes in school. She realized that she told her daughter that being a lady meant she had to be humble and quiet but allowed her son to 'brag' loudly about his good grades when he came home. "Kachy, you can’t do this!" That’s what the nagging voice in my head kept telling me. For the past one month I have been constantly battling with self inadequacy and honestly this feeling it’s the absolute Ghetto! From mood swings to tears to procrastinating to considering giving it all up and back to tears again—I've experienced it all. It's been confusing, especially since I was always confident in my abilities during school. So what’s this voice talking about? Well, it’s time to silence that voice! It was starting to impact my relationships with my family, friends, and most importantly, my mental well-being. After some deep reflection and self-analysis, I identified the root causes. I realized I was scared and anxious about life as a graduate. I hadn’t fully defined my purpose yet, and the pressure of meeting social media standards was holding me back. While I’ve accumulated skills like public speaking, copywriting, and sewing, I haven’t honed them to the level I aspired. I was becoming a jack of all trades but a master of none. Identifying these challenges is the first step in overcoming them. Now, onto finding solutions! It can be very convenient to do nothing about these and sulk all day but I refuse to let these obstacles become excuses. It’s time to reclaim my confidence and channel my inner Kachy 2.0! Fast forward two weeks, and I am a work in progress. My mood has improved significantly, and I’m rediscovering my happy, goofy self—thanks to my favorite podcasts and experimenting with different fashion styles. I’m also elevating my skills by enrolling in Ladies In Tech Africa Bootcap copywriting class (shoutout to Mr. Dipo @Oladipo Lawson, incredible teacher!). So, what’s that voice saying now? I want to share something with you—it’s easy to overlook your progress when you're always focused on the next big thing. After almost a decade in the media industry, I’ve realised this can be both a blessing and a curse. It keeps you moving forward, but it can also make you forget to celebrate your wins. That’s exactly how I felt looking back at the first six months of 2024. At the start of the year, I made a conscious decision to push my limits and see what I could truly achieve. This led me to re-evaluate my mission as a leader, which influences everything I do—from being an Editor-in-Chief to a Creative Director and Transmedia Storytelling Director. This re-evaluation set the stage for the goals I set and the projects I took on. Leading the operations at Marie Claire Nigeria has been a big part of this journey, with its fair share of challenges and rewards. One of the most crucial decisions was finding the right People’s Manager, Fejiro Ubueme to guide our team. That choice, along with solid strategic planning and teamwork, led to a 177% increase in views and a 304% growth in our user base during H1. We also saw our revenue jump by 80% in just the last three months, proving how important it is to have the right people in place. In March, we officially launched Marie Claire Nigeria with our inaugural Power Brunch, partnering with amazing collaborators like ALARA. This launch wasn’t just about starting something new; it was also about rethinking how we build business relationships—a shift that’s been key to our growth. This period of growth inspired me to revive a documentary project that explores the intersection of climate change, resource management, and gender. What started as a challenging venture has turned into a rewarding journey, and with two policy partners now on board, I’m excited to see the impact this project will have. As I continued to push the boundaries of storytelling, I had the privilege of working on the "Keep Walking with TRACE" series and the "Johnnie with Dad" campaign with TRACE. These projects reminded me of how powerful storytelling can be in connecting people and communities. They’ve been some of the most fulfilling parts of my work, and I’m incredibly grateful for the trust to bring these stories to life. One of the biggest lessons from H1 was the importance of continuous learning. To better bridge the gap between social impact storytelling and effective distribution, I took a course in product management with ProductDive. This experience deepened my understanding and led to my being recognised as a Star of the Cohort, which only motivated me to keep growing. Looking back, H1 pushed me in ways I didn’t expect, but the lessons in leadership, prioritization, and determination were priceless. Now, as I move into H2, I’m excited to see how these experiences will shape the next chapter of this journey.
