Does the new Highway Code in the UK push for Safer, Greener Modes of Transport? 🚗 🚲 Today I was invited to share perspectives on GB News Breakfast 📺 regarding the major 2022 updates to the #highwaycode, which were just actioned this week. At the core, I argued for encouraging a transition towards more sustainable and active ways of getting around. I am a motorist as well. What do you think? Are these updated regulations a step in the right direction? Should we be pushing harder for safer infrastructure and policies that get people walking, cycling, and using public transit? Disused car parks Interesting to note in Deputy Prime Minster Angela Rayners speech in parliament yesterday, specific reference to disused car parks as places for new development. "That is why we will release lower-quality grey-belt sites, disused car parks and garages, and ugly wasteland to meet the needs of 2024". Nothing wrong with the principle except of course new developments create transport demand. So it's to be hoped that any new development takes a holistic view to planning mobility as well as planning construction. #carparks #parking #mobility #transport #transportplanning #activetravel

After determining oversized vehicles cannot safely travel the century-old Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, the National Park Service will implement a rerouting plan in mid-2026. The park service has observed that motorcoaches, RVs, travel trailers, and other similar large vehicles cannot use the road without crossing the center line and are exceeding the weight limits for the highway's multiple historical bridges. These vehicles also cannot pass through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel without halting oncoming traffic. (The tunnel's escorted hours for the remainder of 2024 and 2025 will be the same: 8 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. The NPS website provides more info concerning the tunnel here: https://lnkd.in/eiySpEAN.) Oversized vehicles will still be able to access Zion National Park, but they they must follow alternate routes to enter and travel throughout the park. NTA has been in conversation with park and state officials, providing tour operator and motorcoach operator perspectives to make this change as minimally disruptive as possible. Historically, roadways aren’t built for active transportation – meaning pedestrian, bike, or transit traffic. - Sidewalks are too narrow; - Roadways are too wide to traverse; - Transit stops are spaced too far apart; and - Bikes are forced to share the road with cars. The result: a steady increase in vehicle-related injuries (including death) and a decline in active transportation across North America. We hope to change that at Lakeview Village by introducing a number of things that will allow residents to reclaim how they use roadways - and, most importantly, without the use of a car.
