New Working Paper! What’s behind the multi-issue activism of community health workers in Chhattisgarh, India?   Shriyuta A. and Samir Garg report on action research into  the importance of collective identity for Mitanins (‘female friends’). The Mitanin initiative has endured 20 years and now comprises more than 72,000 CHWs reaching around 24 million people. Mitanins engage in activities to defend the rights of their communities not only to healthcare, but also to food security and to live in freedom from violence.   The research looks at patterns in multi-issue activism. It includes a survey of 558 Mitanins, and an examination of collective identity through group discussions, interviews, and content analysis of rights-based songs and slogans.   Collective action and collective identity as women leaders in solidarity with the community, are mutually reinforcing and have enabled Mitanins to undertake multi-issue activism & transform themselves into frontline rights defenders.
