Speaking on Group14’s decade-long path from innovation to commercialization, CTO and Co-Founder Rick Costantino joined the University of Maryland Center for Research in Extreme Batteries’ Winter Meeting to discuss how SCC55™ is elevating all battery applications. Group14 has become the world’s largest manufacturer of advanced silicon battery materials, with a growing footprint across North America, Europe and Asia. Today, we’re transforming the way we think about rechargeable batteries and their applications – from AI-enabled devices to grid storage.

At Battery-News, we are excited to continue our work this year, gathering publicly available information from the battery industry to create and update maps that enhance transparency across the entire value chain and its stakeholders. Our goal is to make the complex world of battery technology more accessible and understandable. We’re kicking off 2025 with an update on battery testing. Right now, we are working intensively on a comprehensive map of testing facilities in North America. Battery testing plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, performance, and longevity of future battery systems. If you know of certified test centers or have information to share, we would be grateful if you could send us a link or connect with us directly. This project has been led by my colleague Niklas Kisseler, who heads the battery safety group at PEM RWTH Aachen University. His work highlights the importance of early testing for battery cells and modules as a key part of developing next-generation systems. By refining testing processes and striving for highly realistic simulations, researchers like Nima Ghandily, Head of the Battery Abuse Center, are making vital contributions to the field as part of their doctoral research. As always, we are driven by the mission to provide insights that empower the industry to innovate responsibly and collaboratively. Congratulations to Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga of North Carolina State University, the Winner of the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize! This award celebrates Professor Baliga’s incredible contribution through his invention, development, and commercialization of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). Since the 1980s, his innovation has been pivotal in reducing worldwide energy and petrol consumption, setting the stage for a greener, more sustainable future. For me, this isn’t just an innovation; it’s a reminder of why I do what I do. Early in my career, fresh from my PhD in electric motors and drives, I dove into software development for inverters. Seeing the incredible energy savings made possible by IGBT-powered systems was inspiring — it made technology's role in a sustainable future tangible. Today, while my focus has shifted to product leadership, IGBTs remain essential to everything from EVs to advanced maritime systems, where they help make vessels cleaner and more efficient. I see it as a full-circle moment: from my early days optimizing energy use to now driving innovative products that impact real-world sustainability. That’s the kind of legacy I aim to contribute to — solutions that make a difference. Congratulations once again to Professor Baliga for a truly transformative invention that continues to inspire the journey toward a sustainable future.
