Ever wondered how AI is transforming the world of Creative design education? Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to conduct a 3-hour workshop for design with AI for JS Institute of Design, diving deep into the world of AI-powered design tools. It was incredible to see their eyes light up as they explored the potential of these technologies! ✨ In this workshop : I asked them to sketch different Emotions ‘Nava-Rasas’ through lines or patterns or any form of their perspective on a paper. Later they gave the same prompt to different tools like #adobefirefly #Gemini, to compare results, made mood boards and a storyboard and finally compared their original sketched ideas so that they understand the creative power of their Brian vs AI output. It is the context and the story behind your concept which prevails over your ability to deliver through AI. Students experimented with the tools, creating unique designs and understanding how AI can enhance their workflow, using #adobe sensei for image generation editing, logo design, and colour palette creation. While AI is powerful, it's crucial to understand its limitations and use it responsibly alongside human expertise. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students appreciating the hands-on approach and the insights into the future of design. Key takeaways: Learning about AI is essential for any aspiring designer in today's digital landscape. Experimentation and a human-centred approach are key to successfully leveraging AI in creative tasks. #ai #aiapplications #aidesign #adobefirefly #googlegemini Special thanks to Nien Siao, Nidhi G. and JS Institute of Design for giving me this opportunity to interact with students and organise the session.

In a recent HCDE Design Jam led by PhD student Pitch Sinlapanuntakul and Professor Mark Zachry, students and mentors from Adobe explored AI-powered tools to support design work. “We are primarily curious how AI can complement the creativity of designers, not replace it,” explained Sinlapanuntakul. “So far, AI advances in the design space have been more around generating art, and I think there’s a big opportunity to look at AI for design tools. So we want to understand from design professionals how they could see integrating AI in their future workflows.”

Professor and head of programme Visual & Experience Design, and Generative Design & AI master's at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, Germany. Computational researcher and designer, The Luxury of Protest.
I have created a new master's programme – Generative Design & AI – that focusses on code and artificial intelligence based approaches to generative creation. Applications are now open for the winter semester start in September 2024. The Generative Design & AI MA is a graduate course where students master the use of cutting edge generative AI platforms, and code-based generative design, to develop visual content and digital products. With its emphasis on the latest artificial intelligence tools, Generative Design & AI future-proofs graduates with a unique skill set that ushers in a new form of creative making that is both innovative and in very high demand across a variety of industries. The master’s is a practice-led programme that is unique in that it combines two of the most exciting generative approaches in design. Applicants with prior degrees or industry experience in UI/UX design, communication/graphic design, product design, or any technology related field who are looking to supercharge their creative skills are encouraged to apply. As a trained designer with varied experiences across different media spaces—from apprenticing with muralists and printmakers, and studying at a studio art school, to working as web developer, graphic designer, and video technician—my approach to digital media, regardless of which mode I'm in, or which tools I use, is uniquely informed by each one of these experiences. The understanding that comes from these experiences gives me the confidence to wield the skills I've built without trepidation, despite the availability of new tools that enable novices to produce work that appears acceptable to the untrained eye, or to the naive consumer. This Nielsen Norman Group article (published in May 2024) suggests that while Gen-AI technology might provoke a shift in the way established skills are valued, experience and taste developed while building the technical skills stack will continue to differentiate veterans from newcomers. Lived experience in the field, along with a lifetime spent learning and appreciating the work of the masters, is still prerequisite to producing great work. Even when much of what's being produced, will be assisted by AI.

I’ve had a change of mind about design. For my entire career, I’ve honed my idea of a graphic designer’s role. I’ve insisted that good designers find a way to be invisible; their role is to translate the message to the intended audience as effectively as possible. With generative AI, it’s never been easier to do exactly that. The slew of new AI tools Adobe dropped this week leave me convinced that my idea of what a “good” designer is will soon be obsolete. Anyone can make exactly the design they want, so long as they can properly describe it. (Incidentally, clients' ability to accurately describe what they want remains a major hurdle. Perhaps the current emphasis on learning how to write prompts will remedy some of this.) Great designers don’t just mimic a style, they create it. While I used to frown on the idea of a designer having a voice, I now see it as the essential way to set them apart from AI and bring genuine value. The problem with striving to be invisible is that eventually, you’ll succeed. #design #ai #creativity

Aspiring designers can significantly boost their productivity and creativity using Generative AI. By automating repetitive tasks and offering intelligent suggestions, AI allows designers to focus on the conceptual and artistic aspects of their work. Instead of replacing creativity, AI acts as a powerful assistant, providing new perspectives and innovative solutions. This technology is invaluable across various design specializations, including fashion, communication, animation, architecture, product design, and UI/UX. For design students, gaining hands-on experience with AI tools is essential to meet future industry demands. Educators should encourage the integration of AI in the curriculum, helping students understand its capabilities and limitations. This approach ensures that budding designers are equipped to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. https://lnkd.in/dRAuHr_3 Dr. Sanjay GUPTA Hindustan Times
