EMS Supervisor of Training and Education and Flight Paramedic for University Hospital Emergency Medical Services in Newark, NJ
I read a comment today that we need to start changing our mindset to think of our profession as “pre-hospital care” and less that it’s just “emergency care”. I could not agree more. This mindset change is so important and overdue. Once we start recognizing that our profession goes well beyond an emergency call we can start to break down our own jaded opinions about “non-emergency” assignments and how they aren’t worthy of our time. We need to start acting like the pre-hospital clinicians that we are and take the time to assess, educate when necessary, and know that everyone is worthy of our care even if it doesn’t include fancy push-dose pressors and intubations.

Do you ever notice how the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference? In healthcare, a moment of empathy—whether it’s a comforting word or simply listening—can completely change a patient’s experience. I’ve seen it happen countless times. Patients not only remember the treatment; they remember how they were treated. When healthcare providers take that extra step to show empathy, it builds trust and strengthens the bond between patients and caregivers. In a busy medical environment, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush, but it’s those small moments of connection that often matter most. Empathy doesn’t require a lot of time, but it makes all the difference. Lending an empathetic ear turns routines into meaningful care, improving not just the patient’s experience but also the team’s overall morale. Just last week, you can see my post about the importance of emotional intelligence in medical leadership. This is just an example of how that can trickle down to the providers themselves, creating an iron clad practice.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role as a Patient Navigator is knowing that I make a real difference in patients’ lives by ensuring they have access to the resources and support needed to actively participate in their medical care. It truly fills my cup to see patients empowered with the tools they need to take control of their health journey. But I’ve also come to understand that not all patients are ready to engage with their care immediately. Some may feel overwhelmed, unsure, or disconnected, and that’s where I see my role as crucial. I continue to reach out, offering guidance and support, hoping to loop them back into their care plan when they are ready. It’s not always easy, but I believe that with patience, persistence, and understanding, we can create stronger connections and help patients realize that they are central to their health outcomes. Making sure they have access to the right resources is a big part of that journey. For me, it’s about more than just coordinating care—it’s about making sure each patient knows they are valued, supported, and have access to everything they need, no matter where they are in their healthcare journey. That’s the kind of work that drives me every day. How are you working to ensure patients have the resources they need to feel empowered in their care?

What a fantastic article written by my friend and colleague, Katie Heskett, MS Ed., CPXP, PMP about the crucial role of genuine human connection in healthcare. #PatientExperience #HealthcareConnection #HumanizingHealthcare #EmpatheticCare #PatientCentricApproach #HealthcareEmpathy #CompassionateCare
"Everybody has a story. When your teams know the stories of their patients, they’ll perform better and they’ll feel better." In this article written by our very own Katie Heskett, MS Ed., CPXP, PMP, we discuss the importance of clinicians understanding their patients' backgrounds beyond medical symptoms. This depth of connection, grounded in genuine human interaction, not only brings fulfillment to clinicians but also ensures better patient outcomes. #PatientExperience #HealthcareConnection #HumanizingHealthcare #EmpatheticCare #PatientCentricApproach #HealthcareEmpathy #CompassionateCare

Storyteller | Turning Project & Engagement chaos into order (one Gantt chart at a time) | Advocate for Patient-centred Care, Mental Health, DEI, Indigenous Health | Believer in Social Prescribing (and a good cup of chai)
Trying to figure out who just came in, while it's absolute chaos everywhere, making you feel like you stepped into a medical drama, minus the dramatic music- well that's my life these days! It’s been a whirlwind these few weeks and hence the delayed update—blame it on my ADHD brain not braining for a bit! 😅 But here I am, as a Registration Clerk at Kingston General Hospital! My journey into healthcare has always been driven by a passion to help people, a curiosity ignited by countless episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, and a desire to make a real difference. Helping patients navigate their initial steps into care has shown me the profound impact of what might seem like a routine task. Every interaction, every smile, every ounce of reassurance—we shape their journey from the moment they arrive. In this fast-paced environment, I’m seeing it all and being the first point of contact, I welcome patients during some of their most challenging moments. It's eye-opening to realize how crucial our role is in shaping their healthcare journey. Each interaction matters. Each smile, each bit of reassurance, and each effort to streamline the process can significantly impact their experience. Yes, there are tough days. Days when you encounter people at their worst, moments filled with fear, grief, and sometimes anger. But understanding their mental state – the anxiety of the unknown, the pain of their condition, and their previous healthcare encounters – is vital. This empathy fuels my commitment to making their first step into care as smooth and supportive as possible. I am incredibly grateful to start my career here, blending compassion with efficiency. The skills and insights I’m gaining are not just about handling paperwork but about understanding patient needs and improving their overall experience and I can see how each lesson here is shaping me to step into the world of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. The empathy learned, the importance of clear communication, and the drive to enhance patient experiences—these are not just skills but principles that will guide my journey forward. This role isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about building bridges of trust and comfort during critical moments. It’s about laying the groundwork for better, safer care. And as I continue to grow and learn here, I’m more determined than ever to make a lasting impact in healthcare. #myKHSC #thisistheplace #movingforward #betterhealthcare
