At Shutterfly, printing photos is kind of our thing. And, we care as much about how they look on your walls and bookshelves as we do about the waste that’s generated during that printing process. With Shutterfly’s reengineered book and card printing process, we were able to save 1 million square feet of paper last year, enough to cover the surface of 17 football fields. Any remaining paper waste is recycled, and in 2023, that measured up to 5,880 tons of recycled material. Interested in learning more about our efforts in waste, recycling and community giving? Question? How acceptable is it to print black ink on packaging materials that will be recycled? What if the printing on the packaging contains solid black ink (see examples), is there still enough near-infra-red (NIR) reflection for the sorting equipment to identify the plastic and sort it correctly? Or will these almost 100% black printed packaging materials (Tetra Pak, Flowpacks, Topseal, Pouches, Wrappers) be effectively filtered from the recycling stream? Who can help me to solve this issue? To be clear, I am not talking about the 100% carbon black barquettes/trays or 100% black foil for breeding soil, for example, these materials are thrown out anyway.
