December is always that time of the year when parents are faced with having difficult discussions with their children and I don't mean the one about santa claus being real but with the Army-Navy game next week, "what is the difference between the Army and Navy and all the other branches?" I have had numerous requests to share this diagram once again since it has helped countless parents navigate this complex question. Required Disclaimers: 1.) I do not take credit for the creation of this visual aid since it was shared with me 2.) I support every branch of the military... yes even the Coast Guard and Space Force 3.) Keep Your Marines Informed x TAL: The American Legion’s DC Conference is February 25-28.* The intent is simple - amass a large presence of veterans in Washington DC to advocate on behalf of #veterans needs across the country. Unfortunately, despite the dates being known (literally) years in advance, the members are often not provided training on our legislative initiatives until mere weeks out. As a result, members lose confidence in their ability to complete the mission. At all times, our aim should be educating the members and providing them the tools necessary to accomplish their objectives. In the case of DC, we should consider monthly meetings, with *legitimate* policy updates. When there are substantial updates on any particular piece of legislation, the members should be notified. It is my experience that our membership is desperate for continuous learning opportunities. As veterans, they already have the intangible soft-skills (patriotism, initiative, leadership) that many Americans lack. It’s our responsibility to provide them the complimentary hard skills. NLC Chairmen and Dept Leadership, I’ll share a few resources in the comments. Feel free to push them to your respective teams. Did you know #veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and #GoldStar Families can obtain a free lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites? Veterans can present one of four forms of acceptable ID (Department of Defense ID Card, Veteran Health ID (VHIC), Veteran ID Card, or veteran’s designation on a state-issued US driver’s license or ID card) at participating federal recreation areas that normally charge an entrance fee. Gold Star Families can obtain information, self-certify they qualify, and download a voucher on NPS.gov Every year, the #NationalParkService offers free entry for all visitors on #VeteransDay (November 11). In addition to the fee waiver, national parks will offer programs, hikes, and other activities. Many national parks have direct connections to the American #military—dozens of battlefields, military parks, and historic sites commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. FRA Launches 2024 Survey on Military and Veterans Benefits As part of its mission to convey enlisted concerns to Capitol Hill, the FRA is conducting an online survey to determine the most crucial military and veteran benefits for active duty and Reserve personnel, retirees, veterans, and their families. The brief survey invites current and former members of the uniformed services, as well as their spouses, to rate various benefits and quality-of-life programs linked to their service to our nation. The FRA urges all current and former military personnel and their spouses to share opinions on the programs they value most. Survey responses and participant comments offer the legislative team vital reference information for Congressional testimony and one-on-one meetings with lawmakers and their staff. Survey results are shared with elected officials on Capitol Hill, key committee staff, and leaders within the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the enlisted sea service perspective.
