Review: RED Raven 4.5K When it comes to cinema cameras, there are only a handful of options to choose from, but the industry titans Arri & RED are the real contenders in the space. The RED Raven, though a fairly dated piece of kit in 2024, can be picked up for a very reasonable price and the footage this camera is capable of would match any modern day cinema package in fair lighting. This camera can still push high frame rates in very reasonable bitrates, producing stunning footage no matter where you point it. You can have more fun with this camera in the edit suite, when you get into the RED RAW settings, you'll be amazing the amount of data and detail this 8 year old camera can produce.

It goes without saying that a cinema screen & projection surface is one of the most essential elements of any custom installation. Here's what we consider when specifying the perfect cinema screen for each project... 👇 📺 The ideal aspect ratio. Are you watching more regular TV shot in 16:9 or dedicated movies which can be 2.40:1? 🔉 Where will the speakers be? Are you able to place your speakers behind the screen like a real theatre? In which case, you’ll need an acoustically transparent screen material. ☀️ How bright is the room? Is your projector bright enough and do you need a higher gain screen surface to help with ambient light conditions? 🍿 How close will you be to the screen? Consider your seating position when choosing the screen size so it’s comfortable to watch. 🎞️ Fixed or masking? For the ultimate experience, you can mask off some of the viewable area to frame various aspect ratio images. LED cinemas offer numerous advantages in the commercial sector. Firstly, LED screens provide superior image quality with vibrant colors, deeper contrasts, and sharper details, enhancing the overall viewing experience. Unlike traditional projectors, LED displays maintain consistent brightness and color accuracy across the entire screen. Additionally, LED technology supports high dynamic range (HDR) content, further enriching the visual appeal. From an operational perspective, LED screens are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. They also eliminate the need for projection rooms, allowing for more flexible and creative theater designs. Moreover, LED cinemas can adapt to various lighting conditions, making them suitable for different types of venues and events, beyond just movie screenings. This versatility opens up new revenue streams, such as hosting concerts, esports events, and corporate presentations. Overall, LED cinemas enhance the audience experience while providing cost-effective and versatile solutions for theater owners.

Ever wanted to capture those epic moving shots? 🎥 I recently combined the Sony FX30 with a car mount for some truly cinematic footage. Here’s how you can do it too: Choose the Right Mount: Ensure it’s sturdy and compatible with your camera. Safety first! - Angle for Impact: Experiment with different angles – side, hood, or roof – for unique perspectives. - Steady & Secure: Use extra stabilizers or gimbals to keep your shots smooth even on bumpy roads. - Test & Adjust: Always test your setup before the actual shoot. Adjust the framing to get the perfect shot. - Plan Your Route: Scout locations and plan your driving route for the best lighting and scenery. - Incorporating a car mount opens up endless possibilities for creative shots. Whether it’s for commercials, music videos, or short films, this setup can take your video production to the next level! 🚀 #SonyFX30 #CinematicShots #CarMount #VideoProduction #CreativeFilmmaking #CameraGear #PrecisionSocial

WIP: Doing some cinema lighting studies; This scene is from Decision to Leave, 2022. Man in suit model via tomy97 on sketchfab. I did a camera analysis, and then modeled and lit the scene to try to best match the lighting. Once I finalize this, maybe I’ll incorporate some cg elements into the original shot ;)

Home Cinema screens are available in many shapes and sizes, offer various masking types, frames and installation options, so it's hard to determine which screen is the best option for each project. Here are a few things we help our integrators consider when specifying the right screen for the job... 📺 Masking screens → Top and bottom These are ideal when your primary content is 16:9. This can be general TV like the news, documentaries or sports that all fill the screen. When a film that has been shot in cinemascope is played, the top and bottom masking moves in to cover the projected black bars that appear above and below the image. → Side masking This is the type that you often experience at your local cinema. A wide 2.35:1 screen can be installed like this, to max out movie watching in the home cinema. When 16:9 content plays, masking moves in from the left and the right borders to cover up the areas where the black bars are. → Masking screens - 4-way The best of both worlds! Masking moves in from all sides, adapting to all aspect ratios and maximising the image. Some even fully close after use, protecting the screen surface. 🎛️ Motorised screens If you're looking to install a motorised screen, you’ll want to be able to control it's movement using a third-party remote by Control4, Crestron, Savant etc - or, at the least, trigger the screen to move when the projector switches on. Ask us about Trigger, RS232 and IP control options for all of our screens. 🖼️ Projection screen frames A thick black velvet border will frame the image perfectly whilst also giving some flexibility for absorbing stray light when the image struggles to fit perfectly. Borderless or frameless screens can look ultra-smart, but the image needs to fit perfectly. Also, when using ultra-short throw projection, be aware that some frame styles could cause a shadow or a dead spot with the projected image. No matter which type of Cinema screen you need, our fantastic partners Stewart Filmscreen and Screen Excellence can you provide you with multiple high-quality options, for a variety of applications.
