Automotive training boosted. The automotive sector is booming and offers several pathways including electrical technology, body repair tech and light and heavy vehicle mechanical technology. So says apprenticeship and traineeship program provider the Work Place Connect (WPC) Group, adding the past year has seen increased interest in EV technology, driven by a greener workforce approach. This trend is supported by Federal Government incentives, offering up to $10,000 for apprentices willing to learn clean energy skills. The New South Wales vocational education sector is facing significant challenges, with apprenticeship and traineeship commencements dropping by 33% since 2011, which exacerbates the region’s ongoing skills shortage, the group says. #BeginnerDiaries 11 years ago, I took my first ever job as a Graduate Engineer Trainee at Royal Enfield. Fresh out of college, I was excited when I found out that it was going to be rotational across 6 different functions! It was my first foray into rotational programs (of which I spent a bulk of my career later at GE / GE Vernova) and the value it gave me was tremendous. Here’s a look at what I learnt the most in the first function I worked for - #Quality. 1. Quality is not something you isolate and work on - it is an outcome of the processes adopted. And your processes are only as strong as the operating system behind it. 2. The automotive industry streamlined this operating system by building it on a foundation of lean problem solving (thanks to the Toyota blueprint). Keep the operations running, iterate on it (continuous improvements), and religiously follow the lean problem solving framework when you spot a problem. 3. Lean problem solving can sound intimidating, but it can be easy to digest if followed methodically. Case in point - the 7 Quality Control tools. They give a step-by-step guide on how to isolate a problem, quantify its impact, and determine the root cause. TLDR - Lean is the backbone / input to building a strong quality product / output. It won’t be perfect at the start, but you will get better over time when it is done right.
