💡Inclusive leaders must engage diverse perspectives that challenge us to confront our own, and others’, biases. Increasing awareness and understanding of these biases helps us remove barriers to belonging, leading to better decision-making, innovation, and overall success. 📕As I research for my next blog post about Pride Month, I’ve chosen to reread these influential books: 1️⃣In "Bad Feminist," Roxane Gay discusses sexual orientation through various lenses, often highlighting the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality. Gay provides a comprehensive and thought-provoking examination of sexual orientation within the broader context of feminism and social equality. 2️⃣“Sister Outsider” by Audre Lorde is a seminal collection of essays and speeches that delve into issues of race, gender, sexuality, and equality. Lorde brings her intersectional perspective to the forefront, exploring how different forms of oppression are interconnected. 3️⃣“Homophobia: A Weapon of Sexism” by Suzanne Pharr is a critical examination of how homophobia and sexism are interconnected and used to maintain systems of oppression. Pharr argues that homophobia is not just a form of prejudice against LGBTQ+ individuals but also a strategic tool used to enforce traditional gender roles and uphold certain power structures. 📈Understanding and valuing diverse perspectives is a business imperative. Leaders who cultivate an inclusive environment unlock the full potential of their teams, fostering creativity, engagement, and success. ❓What are you reading to broaden and deepen your perspective? Diversity is Not Just About Gender 💡 Diversity is not just about gender. In many places, inclusion efforts are still seen as primarily about promoting women in the workplace. But true diversity includes age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, education, physical ability, and more 🌍. 🌍 We are both equal and different. 🌍 We all share similar needs, like respect, dignity, and the chance to grow. But at the same time, we are different — in culture, experience, thoughts, skills, and perspectives. 💡 The key to living well together? Turning these differences into reciprocity. It's not enough to simply recognize diversity (like cultural background, gender, or ways of thinking). #DEI today has evolved to cover a broad set of inequities we encounter in the workplace. Human beings come in all colours and shapes and we are learning as we discover more. The journey in the corporate world started with #race and binary #gender and now has come to include #disability, #age, #nonbinary, #neurodiversity and many more indicators that we have an unconscious #bias for and can impact how we treat someone. Therein comes the concept of #intersectionality. A human being is often not just one but could be a combination of two or more of the above. For example a woman in her 50's could be discriminated against for age and gender. So an approach that caters to gender equity may not address her issues due to #ageism. Similarly measuring the gender distribution as a lone factor may not bring out the the gap in #inclusion on other factors. While it is important to understand this complexity, I increasingly see that we end up fudging how we understand this space. These factors are not in competition with each other. If the oppressed start competing on who is more oppressed, we are losing the war. Every flavor of DEI needs its voice. While intersectionality exists, the solutions women need for parity in the workspace are different from the need for acceptance and equality of nonbinary peers. Slapping a generic DEI initiative will not address these differences. What we need to do, is listen to our colleagues, with the following questions. Is this workplace safe? Is it accessible? Are all voices being heard? Rushing into solutions without deep listening is exhibitive, at the most.
