Happy International Women in Engineering Day everybody! Despite the progress made, engineering remains a male-dominated industry, with only 16.5% of engineers in the UK being female. INWED aims to provide a platform for female engineers, playing a crucial role in encouraging young women to pursue engineering. This year’s theme is #EnhancedByEngineering – profiling the best, brightest and bravest women in engineering, who have enhanced people’s everyday lives and are helping to build towards a brighter future. The recent 'Women in Engineering – Engineering Council’s annual Top 50’ report offers noteworthy insight into the significant roles women play in the engineering industry

To all of the talented female engineers, happy International Women's Day! I wish to recognize your amazing contributions to the engineering community as we celebrate this day. Our world has been profoundly impacted by your commitment, inventiveness, and technological mastery. I have a special message for you right now: 1.    Breaking Barriers: You are trailblazers, dismantling obstacles and dispelling myths. The next generation of women is encouraged to dream large and pursue STEM jobs by your presence in engineering. Keep in mind that you are welcome here. Your enthusiasm, expertise, and distinct viewpoint benefit the field. 2.    Bridging the disparity: Although there is still a gender disparity in engineering, you are the bridge. On International Women in Engineering Day, let's spread the word about the various Engineering Disciplines! Some of our members have expressed their wish to explore other engineering areas. The article in the comments below, provides a good overview. Also, if you wish to encourage young girls into engineering, this article gives you a quick view of the alternative Disciplines so you can have a conversation with young students about alternatives for them.

Women remain underrepresented in engineering and computer science fields, missing out on flexible, lucrative, and high-status careers. In the USA women earn less than one-quarter of bachelor’s degrees in engineering (22%) and computer science (19%). When asked to draw a scientist, only 28% of kids (boys and girls) drew a female scientist. Boys almost always drew men, and girls were twice as likely to draw men as they were to draw women. This difference got worse with age, as 70% of 6-year-old girls drew a woman, whereas only 25% of 16-year-old girls did. 

Not detracting from the great steps that have been made by many, I believe that diversity needs to consider more than just a single label such as gender. Only when we embrace methods of supporting a wider spectrum of thought, approach, experience and personality will we start chipping away at these issues and truly harness the power of people. Not all women are the same. Our age, neuro-diversity, experience, personalities, career goals vary across a spectrum - as do those of men. Focussing on strategies around child-rearing does not fix all the other issues that force us into ill-fitting traditional stereotypes of what it means to be an engineer. Perhaps it’s time to tackle the lack of diversity in the profession as a multi-faceted problem - not just focussing on gender. Maybe it’s time to tackle the root cause of the issue and completely redesign the concept of an engineer; to one that incorporates empathy, creativity and open-mindedness in equal measure to scientific abilities and problem solving capability. When we aren’t being forced to be something we are not, diverse people will join the profession and stay. After all - what kid doesn’t dream of saving the world???

Reflecting on International Women in Engineering Day Yesterday(June 23) marked a significant celebration—International Women in Engineering Day. As a engineering professional, I am filled with pride and enthusiasm as I reflect on the importance of this day. Engineering has always been more than just a profession to me; it's a space where creativity meets innovation, and every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Despite my short experience, I have seen firsthand the incredible impact women engineers can make. So proud to work with some incredible people across the industry💪👷♀️ I recall a discussion where I was asked about my proudest moment. Without a second thought, I answered that it was seeing a project I contributed to come to life after construction. I couldn't fully express the happiness I felt in words. One replied, "Yes, I can imagine," and that shared understanding made the moment even more special. In that room, amidst the silence, I could sense the happiness and pride reflected in each engineer's face. It reminded me that these shared proud moments are what make our journey as engineers so fulfilling. To all the trailblazing women who have paved the way and to my fellow budding engineers: Your resilience, dedication, and passion are shaping a brighter future. Let's continue to break barriers, inspire future generations, and show the world the power of diversity in engineering. Here’s to the remarkable women in engineering—past, present, and future.
