With the participation of academics, animal care professionals and field biologists from around the world, and with the support of Four Paws International and the African Lion EEP, we recently completed an assessment of the welfare priorities of African lion. Having undertaken a previous assessment for Amur tigers, the similarities and differences between these closely related species were really insightful - particularly in relation to diet and travel, but one thing that stood out for African lions was the importance of their sociality. As this video shows, lions are highly social, and so we anticipated this result but for those managing lions in captivity, confirmation of the importance of their sociality to individual welfare means much more than not keeping lions alone. To optimise captive lion welfare we need to consider how we can facilitate fission / fusion sociality (as demonstrated in this video), as well as the ability of lions to undertake cooperative activities, make decisions as a collective, and even "delegate" activities within the pride. Our goal over the next year or so is to develop design and management solutions that aim to address these and other behavioural and cognitive priorities, and ultimately set new, ambitious standards of care for African lions. #carefortherare #animalwelfare #conservation #fourpaws #lion #africanlion #bantrophyhunting #lionconservation
