The title "About half of experienced Malaysian graduates surveyed are overqualified for their jobs" perhaps it will become more intuitive and carry more urgency if it is rephrased as such "About half of experienced Malaysian graduates fail to secure jobs commensurate with their qualifications." Over the years, there have been so much hypes about learning infrastructure such as AI-assisted learning, online learning tools and etc. These are important but yet there are only the vessels. Perhaps it is time to focus on the quality of the content itself (not so much on the vessels)? Quality content is the outcome of the quality of the lecturers delivering the material. Are there sufficient resources and guidance provided to them to ensure their mastery in their respective fields? Or they probably don't need any guidance simply because they have PhDs and so just put them in their respective slots and hope that they perform wonders in both teaching and research? When the PPSMI was first introduced in 2003, I was among the supporters. When it was abolished, I was quite frustrated. As a HR Professional, I can say with conviction that among the frustration of many employers in Malaysia is the inability of job seekers to communicate proficiently in English. I'm fully aware of the arguments given by most Malay nationalists about how countries like Japan and Korea, and now China, that don't have PPSMI have proven that they can become economic giants without English proficiency. I acknowledge that it is true. However, I personally do not see how Malaysians, especially Malays, could lose their Malay language proficiency or even their culture & heritage simply because they learn Science & Mathematics in English. If by learning those subjects in English could expedite the nation's economic growth in this current global economy - which Singapore has clearly proven - then why can't Malaysian do the same? Yes there are still Malaysians - despite having been independence for almost 70 years - who still couldn't speak proficient national language (Malay language), it's a fact that it's not due to learning Science & Maths in English. PPSMI was first introduced 46 years after independence and it was scrapped few years later. There were, and still are Malaysians who can't speak Malaysian national language. To me, that's clear proof that the cause isn't PPSMI. Minds need to open wider. Culture & heritage shouldn't be an excuse for not learning other things. Otherwise, I'd personally feel ashamed as a Malay when my culture & heritage appears to be anti-learning. Because I know that my culture encourages learning, exploration, development and progress. Progress comes along with knowledge. I know for a fact that my culture & heritage encourages learning.
