An interest topic of conversation came up at a dinner with young colleagues recently. To paraphrase: “Entry-level software engineers are asked to do things that are neither challenging nor interesting.” Let me turn this around. Why do we, as software engineers, get hired in the first place? These are the expectations of software engineers: 1) Solve problems someone else identified by applying solutions someone else outlined, 2) Identify problems no one else noticed and solve them in a way someone else helped you with, 3) Identify problems and develop solutions, 4) Take ownership of both problems and solutions, Don’t get stuck on point 1. That is how you start. Don't forget the other 3 points, because that's how you grow.

My journey as a Software Engineer so far: Junior Software Engineer: "I don't know enough" Software Engineer: "I don't know enough" Senior Software Engineer: "I still don't know enough" Staff Software Engineer: "I genuinely, honestly, still don't know enough" So, this feeling is somewhat permanent. If you are on the same path (of engineering), this feeling will grow really strong sometimes, and other times you'd feel like a superhuman, especially when you accomplish something challenging. This feeling is what indicates that you should start working on the things that you think you should know. Trust me on this one, the feeling of not knowing enough will never go away, and you should nurture it and keep learning. #softwareengineering #lifetimelearning

Junior software engineer : "There is a hot bug. I'll have to check how this feature works. I am not sure what the solution is" Senior software engineer : "There is a hot bug. I know this is how it exactly works in class XYZ. This is what the fix to the problem should be" For junior software engineers, it is crucial you build subject matter expertise and deep understanding of how things work exactly and not just at the surface level. You become the point of contact when things aren't working right or where there is an issue. That is also when you can propose and implement bigger and newer changes, because you fully understand how it works today. #softwareengineering
