What’s hard and what’s questionable about normalizing classical music? 🔸WHY IS NORMALIZING CLASSICAL MUSIC HARD?🔸 You know the oft-stated reasons: 1. Accessibility: It’s perceived as requiring deep knowledge to enjoy, often making it intimidating for newcomers. 2. Cultural Perception: Often viewed as elitist in many non European countries, it’s historically been tied to the upper classes. 3. Cost: High ticket prices and formal settings can be barriers. 4. Marketing: Traditional approaches don’t engage the digital-savvy younger generation. 5. Education: Declining arts education means fewer young people are exposed to classical music early on. 6. Competition: With so many genres easily accessible, classical music has to fight harder for attention. 7. Format: Longer, complex compositions can deter those accustomed to quick, catchy tunes. 8. Presentation: Conventional concert settings might not appeal to everyone. 🔸WHY MIGHT IT BE QUESTIONABLE TO NORMALIZE IT?🔸 There are also compelling reasons to maintain classical music’s traditional elements: 1. Preservation of Artistic Integrity: Classical music is steeped in a rich history and tradition that represents centuries of cultural evolution. Altering its form to cater to contemporary tastes can dilute its essence and undermine the artistic integrity of the works. 2. Depth and Complexity: The complexity and depth of classical compositions can sometimes offer a unique experience that isn’t meant to be simplified. These elements challenge the listener intellectually and emotionally, offering a richer experience for those willing to engage deeply. 3. Cultural Diversity: Just as we appreciate diversity in cultural expressions across the world, the unique characteristics of classical music enrich the global cultural landscape. Its distinctiveness can be something to be celebrated, not reshaped to fit modern norms. 4. Educational Value: Classical music has educational benefits that extend beyond music appreciation, including improving cognitive abilities, concentration, and memory. Preserving its complexity is crucial for maintaining these benefits. 5. Audience Segmentation: Not all art needs to appeal to everyone. Just like specialized genres in literature and film appeal to particular audiences, classical music has its own niche. It serves a community that values and supports its continuation in its traditional form. 6. Historical Continuity: Maintaining the traditional structures of classical music ensures continuity with the past, allowing modern audiences to connect with historical and cultural roots in a meaningful way. 7. Intrinsic Beauty and Emotional Depth: Many argue that the intrinsic beauty and emotional depth of classical music do not need modifications to be appreciated. Its power lies in its ability to evoke profound emotional responses through its original form. #ClassicalMusic #MusicIndustry #CulturalBarriers #MusicEducation #ArtsMarketing
‘Classical music has long been more sinned against than sinning in this regard. Most classical festivals and venues have for a long time incorporated at least some element of folk, jazz or world music, but the same cannot be said vice versa’ – my latest, spurred on by the BBC Proms programme, on the normalisation of classical music. Quite pleased with my AI generated image, tbh! If you enjoy, please sign up to my free Substack! https://lnkd.in/epscwVAN

This is a good indicator that past success will not result in positive results today. However with the increase in ticket pricing some might say the event was still successful even of occupancy was down for many valid reasons. It will be interesting to see what next year brings.
#Coachella, the biggest music festival in the US, has endured a 14%-17% dip in ticket sales as the first weekend came to a close in #California. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/edW9wUkE

Concert Pianist, Founder and AD at Brasil Classical. Academia Jovem Concertante and Rio Int’l Chamber Music Week
Most orchestras and classical music festivals are losing their purpose and sense of why, due to fear and ignorance. One thing needs to be clear: why are we playing classical music? Who is our primary audience? What are we doing to contribute to society's needs as we continue practicing this centuries old art form? The answer to the overrated word "innovation" in our frightened classical music world is being taken in a very amateur and lazy way. Most organizers are not putting in the hours necessary to answer this demand. The result is a confused curatorship that sets the scene for growing mediocrity. If we think that fewer people are attending classical music concerts, then what do we do? Ah, let's play another pops concert that will help sell tickets and bring in new audiences. Well, Starbucks will not start selling beer all of a sudden just because the pub around the corner is packed on Friday afternoon. Starbucks knows it sells coffee and, with it, an environment that aligns with working, reading, and creating. There is a time for that! What about us? What is our product? The more we know about what we do and, first and foremost, why this art form should exist in people’s lives, the better we will face our challenges.
