#SoftBankAcquiresGraphcore SoftBank Buys AI Chipmaker Graphcore to Boost AI Ambitions 🚀 SoftBank has acquired Graphcore, a British #chipmaking startup known for its advanced AI processors. This strategic move is expected to accelerate SoftBank's push into the AI industry, making it a stronger competitor against giants like Nvidia. Founded in 2016, Graphcore has developed "intelligence processing units" (IPUs) that offer specialized AI capabilities. Despite raising nearly $700 million in funding, Graphcore has struggled financially, reporting $205 million in pre-tax losses in 2022. Today’s #ChartoftheDay shows that the private sector is seemingly hesitant to take a quantum leap. Quantum technology startups saw a massive influx of investment between 2021 and 2022, peaking at around $2.35 billion. However, generative AI and other technologies seemed to overshadow the quantum tech sector, with investments declining by $1.71 billion (or 27%) in 2023. We are very honored to receive this Innosuisse grant which came at a very strategic point in the life cycle of of Lightium. Few additional points: 💡 1. This grant is part of the new Innosuisse funding instrument called Startup Innovation Project (SIP) which specifically designed to support young tech based startups prior to market entry (https://lnkd.in/eebU4Xah) 🏇 2. This is an extremely competitive program with 10s or 100s of applications for each call and we are quite honored and lucky to be the only company who has been funded in the #engineering vertical in this round! (https://lnkd.in/eXYFSUP8) 🎄 3. We actually wrote this grant during the Christmas holiday where we lock ourselves in our office for several days practically to write this grant... it is very satisfactory to see the hard work and many sleepless night would finally pay off 😊. 🇨🇭 4. The #Swiss startup and tech ecosystem is very rich and quite dynamic. You can find a lot of support instruments such as Innosuisse, Venture Kick which they bring a lot more than just financial support. Also with world renown institutes such as ETH Zürich and EPFL providing a constant supply of highly skilled graduation, no wonder Swiss has been the most innovative country for several years in a row.
