Today, I came across the HURUN INDIA Top 100 under 30 Entrepreneurs Watchlist - 2023. Curious to see the list of celebrated founders, I ended up slicing and dicing the data to uncover some interesting facts about the set of founders in this list. The researcher in me questioned "What is the basis of this list? is this from the entire sample set or does this have a selection bias?" Nevertheless, keeping aside the above concerns, it showcased an interesting story. 77 companies across 26 industries were mentioned but only 3 industries (EdTech, Fintech and SaaS) together provided 41 of the founders in the list. 32/100 founders came from the 4 startup hubs (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai), the remaining from 47 different cities in India. What was most interesting was the nuggets of information on the founders, all 100 of them. Appreciate the insight it provided and the plethora of spaces, ideas and creative minds working behind some of the well-known names. There was an analysis of the universities the founders attended for their undergrad, however, given that the average age of the founders in this list is 28(in an under-30 list), I did not give it much focus. IMHO, while the university does add value, given the average age to be on the higher side, other factors may have a role to play in the story as well. While there were some statistics on the gender ratio of the founders, I disagreed with how it was presented, primarily due to no clarity on the dataset and assumptions behind the same.
