There are times when difficult decisions need to be made, not just for personal reasons but for the greater good. The recent allegations against SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch bring back memories of the Harshad Mehta scam that shook our financial system years ago. SEBI was created to restore and protect our trust in the markets, and it’s done an incredible job of that over the years.But now, with these accusations from Hindenburg Research, questioning conflicts of interest involving Ms. Buch and her husband, it feels like we’re standing at another crossroads. Whether these allegations are true or not, the fact that they’re being raised at such a high level is deeply unsettling.In moments like these, I believe stepping down isn’t about admitting any wrongdoing—it’s about protecting the trust that SEBI has built. When there’s even a hint of bias or conflict at the top, it can cast a long shadow over everything else. And in this case, the stakes couldn’t be higher, not just for SEBI but for the integrity of our entire financial system.For Ms. Buch, temporarily stepping aside could be a powerful gesture—a way to ensure that SEBI’s work continues without any clouds of doubt hanging over it. It’s about putting the integrity of our financial markets first. As someone who deeply values transparency and accountability, I believe this would show a strong commitment to the principles that SEBI stands for.
