Working with Elaine Myrback at EMS Consulting is one of the great pleasures of my career. This article highlights just a few reasons for that.

As professionals, we often draw inspiration from various aspects of our lives, and for lawyers who are single parents, balancing career and family can be particularly challenging yet profoundly rewarding. Reflecting on Gregory Peck's iconic portrayal of Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird," it's worth noting how his visit to Monroeville, Alabama, to meet Harper Lee's father, Amasa Lee, enriched his performance. Amasa, a real-life single father and lawyer, served as the inspiration for Atticus Finch. Observing Amasa's dedication to his children and his community provided Peck with invaluable insights into the strength, compassion, and resilience required of single parents. For single parent lawyers, Peck's experience is a powerful reminder that your dual roles can significantly enrich your professional life. The empathy, patience, and problem-solving skills honed at home naturally translate into your legal practice, allowing you to connect with clients on a deeper level and advocate with greater understanding and conviction. Perhaps it works the other way around as well. We can hone valuable skills at work and apply them at home (but try not to get called out too much for “lawyering” your loved ones - that doesn’t feel so good when it goes to the core of how you think and communicate). Your journey as a single parent and lawyer is not just a testament to your capabilities but also an inspiration to your colleagues and clients. Pathway to Participation Week 5 - Networking. We're very grateful thanks to our special guests, Miranda McDonald, MPA from Tennessee Titans One Community, and Sarah Lowery, CPSM from Turner Construction Company, for their invaluable contribution to Week 5 of the Pathway to Participation program.
