After a really tough 2023, one of the biggest turnarounds in terms of hiring, has been across my investment banking clients. Very little hiring was done across the board last year, so there is a big appetite to hire and catch up on headcount targets, as well as using remaining budgets. I've seen a big spike in hiring, particularly across ESG, emerging tech, and investor relations/distribution in London and New York. There will be a lot of passive candidates on the market that have been sitting tight in a tough market, and there will be movement this year. RECRUITING UPDATE 5/14 The lateral hiring market is gaining momentum, particularly for mid-level Associates and Vice Presidents in technology and restructuring M&A. However, clients are hesitant to consider Associate 3 candidates who are expecting a promotion at the end of the year, and placing VP3/4s who anticipate a Director role within a year is proving to be difficult. Directors who have not been originating business are costly and vulnerable to layoffs, with reports of several banks making cuts among underperforming Analyst 1s and Directors in the past week. We anticipate further layoffs to occur in June as banks reassess their personnel needs. Job seekers should prioritize adaptability in their search. Instead of waiting for the ideal role, it's important to be open to various opportunities.
