In this pursuit, I have made a conscious effort to minimize plastic consumption in my everyday life, aligning with the principles of my research topic. By simply publishing groundbreaking research papers and participating in policy meetings and conferences convened to address global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, #carbon emission, etc. will not solve the problem. Rather, the solution to all the problems begins with our #responsibility as we all serve as a catalyst for change. The true progress will happen when we embody the principles of #sustainability in our everyday lives and become conscious of our actions. This is not about abandoning our academic pursuits, but we need to give practical application to our scholarly work. It’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Let’s celebrate the achievements, dedication, and brilliance of women and girls in science around the world. At IFM our women in science are trailblazers - leading groundbreaking research and helping to shape the future of materials science. They are exploring all aspects of material science, including: ⭐ New ionic materials for energy technologies – such as new electrolytes for next generation batteries, such as lithium metal or sodium ion batteries, to help improve safety and performance. ⭐ Functional and sustainable polymer-based materials for various applications in automotive, construction, oil and gas. ⭐ The recycling and recovery of critical materials in used batteries and rare earth magnets used in every motor driving an EV or a wind turbine. ⭐ A technique to manufacture superfine short fibres ⭐ Uncovering pathways to recover carbon fibre for reuse or repurpose to reduce their environmental impact. ⭐ Multifunctional coatings for energy applications – in particular, structural energy storage composites in electric vehicles. The apocalypse is a popular topic in movies and series such as The Last of Us (2023) and Wall-E (2008). Why are we so eager to watch our own downfall? Is it because we are failing to turn the tide? Isn't it time we face the fact that we have had our best time on earth? We seem to be doing well with switching to solar and wind energy, recycling and clothing swaps but is that enough? The way of life we have adopted in the West is not sustainable. Climate scientists point to the irreversible consequences of the number of cars, eating meat and emissions from large corporations. During Apocalypsophy, Lisa Doeland talks about why we just can't seem to accept that the world as we know it is doomed. Why do we pin our hopes on new technologies while not adapting our lifestyles? How can we stay hopeful in the middle of our downfall? Drs. Lisa Doeland is a PhD candidate at Radboud University and teaches at Erasmus University College (EUC). 🎉Exciting news!🎉 I am delighted to share that I have recently obtained a new certification from Lund University in "Working for a Sustainable Future: Concepts and Approaches"! As we continue to face global challenges related to climate change, sustainability has become a critical focus for individuals and organizations alike. This program enabled me to master key sustainability concepts and critically integrate environmental, social, and economic perspectives into work and research. With a focus on Agenda 2030, I explored innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges across five modules: Module 1: Explored sustainability concepts and communication methods, including strong vs. weak sustainability, resilience, and planetary boundaries. Module 2: Focused on systems thinking and its application for long-term sustainability solutions. Module 3: Examined sustainable future drivers like circular economy and transformative policy frameworks. Module 4: Discussed innovation's role in sustainability, covering technological, social, and financial aspects. Module 5: Provided insights on modeling scenarios for climate, biodiversity, and spatial planning in achieving sustainability. During this academic year, we've aimed to highlight how small changes in our everyday lives can lead to greater sustainability, alongside showcasing the research efforts within Materials Engineering to improve our world. 🌱    For now, our last #sustainablechallenge focuses on carbon footprint. Do you know your carbon footprint? 🌍 Do you understand how your daily choices and lifestyle impact the world? Try the Lifestyle test by The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra on their website! By taking this anonymous test, you'll receive tips to enhance your sustainability choices and contribute to a better understanding of people's sustainability decisions. 💡  A comprehensive understanding of the carbon footprint 🌍 associated with various materials engineering applications is crucial for identifying key areas for improvement. This focus has become an integral part of many of our research projects.  For example, the Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia consortium Climate Smart Health Technologies (#CLISHEAT), led by Emilia Peltola, investigates the carbon footprint ♻️ of clinical care 🏥 and develops technologies for greener diagnostics and treatment. In this project, we have partnered with the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke) to understand and mitigate the carbon footprint of clinical care.  Similarly, in the M-ERA.NET consortium, DURATRANS (Sustainable and Highly Durable Nanowire-Based Flexible Transparent Conductive Surfaces for Advanced Electronics) ⚡, led by Vipul Sharma, the goal is to identify environmental hotspots ♻️ in the production stages through a comprehensive life cycle assessment 🔍. This assessment will integrate ecological considerations into the design stages of advanced electronics. In this endeavour, we have partnered with DigInnoCent s.r.o. to conduct the life cycle assessment.  You can use the #SustainableChallenge hashtag to revisit our past challenges. In spring, we tackled reducing meat consumption, creating bioinspired structures, minimizing food waste, and pioneering technologies to decrease healthcare's carbon footprint. We've also developed energy-efficient lighting devices and explored ways to conserve energy in our work and study routines. 💡 Thank you for embarking on this journey with us! 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 for the sustainable inspirational session of Paul Szabó-Müller 📣 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: How can digital key technologies support sustainability? In this session you will particularly learn about the application of digital technologies as an enabler of the transition towards a Circular Economy (e.g. repair, reuse, recycling). One example is the HRW's Circular Digital Economy Lab (CDEL) which combines artificial intelligence, robotics and other technologies to automize and improve e-waste recycling. Another example is the introduction of digital product passports in the EU for providing better sustainability information throughout the whole life cycle of relevant products such as batteries, textiles and steel. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗦𝘇𝗮𝗯ó-𝗠ü𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿: Paul Szabó-Müller is research associate at the Computer Science Institute of the Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW) in Bottrop, Germany. Based on his background in economic geography, his current research focus lies on the initiation and the management of a regional transition towards a Circular Economy in the Ruhr Area. He was/is project manager of several research projects such as Prosperkolleg, reWIR and #digital.zirkulär.ruhr, which deal with related topics such as community and network building, education, digitalization/twin transition, knowledge and technology transfer and sustainable/transformative structural change.
