Recently, a new revolutionary #stacked #intelligent #metasurface (#SIM) technology that uses metasurfaces to process signals directly in the #electromagnetic #wave domain. The researchers harness SIM to implement holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) communications without the need for excessive radio-frequency components. This provides a big advantage over conventional MIMO designs. Additionally, the SIMs can automatically perform transmit precoding at the source and combining at the destination as the waves pass through SIM. An SIM is fabricated by a sophisticated amalgam of multiple stacked metasurface layers, which may outperform its single-layer metasurface counterparts, such as #reconfigurable #intelligent #surfaces (#RIS) and metasurface lenses. The authors harness this new SIM for implementing #holographic #multiple-#input #multiple-#output (#HMIMO) communications without requiring excessive #radio-#frequency (#RF) chains, which is a substantial benefit compared to existing implementations. First of all, they propose an HMIMO communication system based on a pair of SIM at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), respectively. In sharp contrast to the conventional MIMO designs, SIM is capable of automatically accomplishing transmit precoding and receiver combining, as the EM waves propagate through them. As such, each spatial stream can be directly radiated and recovered from the corresponding transmit and receive port. Secondly, they formulate the problem of minimizing the error between the actual end-to-end channel matrix and the target diagonal one, representing a flawless interference-free system of parallel subchannels. This is achieved by jointly optimizing the phase shifts associated with all the metasurface layers of both the TX-SIM and RX-SIM. A few days ago I received an invitation for the launch event of a new device that claims to render analogue cameras obsolete. No one was upset by that tagline because analogue technology is already nearing its end of life. Those who keep up with technology and can adapt to changes will be fine with this transition(not all actually). However, what about individuals who still have a lot of old analogue technology in stock??? They are likely concerned about this news and may try to reinterpret the statement about technology migration to avoid losses(disposal). It's normal for people with their own agendas to act in their own interests. This is why convincing consumers that technology is becoming obsolete is not easy. ***I like these concepts of events. This work opens a new chapter in the 100, 000 year-old concept of paint, by leveraging innovations in nano-technology in the sub-THz frequency range. More specifically, the groundbreaking concept of #Internet #of #Paint (#IoP) is introduced along with a comprehensive channel model and a capacity analysis for nano-scale radios embedded in paint and communicating through paint. Nano-network devices, integrated within a paint medium, communicate via a multipath strategy, encompassing direct waves, reflections from interfaces, and lateral wave propagation. The evaluation incorporates three distinct paint types to assess #path #losses, received powers, and channel capacity.
