The Zeigertelegraf was invented by Carl Friedrich Gauss and Wilhelm Weber in the 1830s. They developed it independently as a mechanical telegraph system. Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske, who founded Siemens & Halske later in 1847, were not involved in the invention of the Zeigertelegraf. Instead, Siemens & Halske focused on commercializing and advancing telegraphic technology, particularly in developing and improving electrical telegraphs, which were more efficient and practical for long-distance communication than earlier mechanical systems like the Zeigertelegraf.

Siemens Brothers & Co made and installed telegraph links across the British Empire. In 1872 they were in Australia installing a 3,200 km line between Adelaide and Darwin , using camels to transport materials. Many of the original 36,000 timber poles were destroyed by termites and were replaced within a decade by iron.
